As more and more people have started putting together beer cellars, I’ve had plenty ask how long you should age beer. I wish I had an easy answer.  There are so many factors that go into aging beer that make it almost impossible to give an answer.

But, what if you want to get an idea of what a beer tastes like over the course of five years without putting in the time, effort, and patience to cellar that beer? Well, my friends, do I have an event for you.

On Thursday, December 27th beginning at 7PM, 33 Wine Shop and Tasting Bar will be throwing a very special tasting featuring a five year vertical of Deschutes Brewery The Abyss Imperial Stout.

This will be a ticketed event (which will cost you $25) which will give you 4oz samples of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Abyss as well as a chance to hang out with Brian Faivre, head brewer of Deschutes.   As you can imagine, this will be a popular event. So to make it fair, Jeff Stetner (owner of 33 Wine) will be doing a lottery for the 33 (get it?) tickets that will be made available for this event.

If you’re interested in your chance to attend, email abysstasting@gmail.com with the subject of “STL Hops.” Each entry (and only one entry per person, please) will get you and a guest and opportunity to purchase a ticket for the event.  Jeff will be drawing the winners tomorrow (December 5th) at 3PM.

To add a cherry to the top of this delicious sundae, Jeff will allow everyone to bring a favorite bottle from your cellar to pass around to your friends after we finish the Abyss.  Good luck everyone!
