sohaThe first time I met Tallgrass Brewing‘s owner Jeff Gill we were eating lunch at the always delicious Farmhaus. He was telling me about a brand new beer they were coming out with they named 8-Bit.

He explained it was going to be a juicy American Pale Ale with a big tropical fruit aroma and flavor thanks to Galaxy hops.  And while the beer sounded delicious on paper, what hooked me is when he described the can.

He told me they were looking to make a retro video game can, with 8-bit graphics on the side.  I immediately was hooked.  I flat out told him it would be a hit.  And while the packaging looks great, the beer is even better.  So when Tallgrass’ sales rep Jordan Luster told me about the bigger version of 8-Bit, named 16-Bit, I knew I wanted to try it.

Well, you’ll have your opportunity today when South Hampton Bar and Grill releases cans of 16-Bit when the bar opens. Every can of Tallgrass that gets purchased has a chance of winning a pair of tickets to Microfest! So, go enjoy some new beer in a retro way today at SoHa.

Odell_Brewing_Company_logoWe all have our own beer-related pet peeves.  For those that know me closely, they know that my A #1 pet peeve is how people continually screw up Odell Brewing Company. O’dell, O’Dells, etc. The owner’s name is Doug Odell.  No apostrophe.

Whew, I feel better.

Anyway, I don’t think people realize how lucky we are to have Odell Brewing. Personally, they’re one of my favorite breweries and they’re currently only available in 11 states.

Odell has a whole crew of people in town and they’ve put together a bunch of events all next week to get the word out about Odell.  Here’s a look at the line-up:

One of the places that’s helped to make our community even more special is South Hampton Bar and Grill. Rocky and John at SoHa have worked hard to not only provide one of the most unique draft lists in St. Louis but also a comfortable location to enjoy some beer.

To kick off their 2nd birthday, the guys at SoHa have put together two days of awesome beers to enjoy. Here’s a look:

Friday Oct 3rd:
Goose Island Bourbon County Stout (2013)
Perennial Loomi Weisse
Bells Kalhaven Ale
Cask Schlafly TIPA

Saturday Oct 4th:
Cantillon Cuvee St Gilloise
4Hands Volume 2
2nd Shift Cask Mullineaux with grapes – Cond. w/ Brett Brux

All of these beers go on tap at 6PM on their respective days. If you can’t make it up on Friday or Saturday night, there is always the possibility these beers make it to the next day, but I wouldn’t chance it. If you really want to enjoy these beers, make sure to visit SoHa this weekend.

sohaWe could possibly have one of our hottest days of the year today, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying some awesome stouts. Let’s be honest, nothing satisfies like a big, black beer.

Tonight, beginning at 7PM, South Hampton Bar and Grill will be serving up two of the biggest, blackest beers around. You’ll get a chance to enjoy 4 Hands Brewing Company Bona Fide Imperial Stout and also Bell’s Brewery Black Note Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout.

If you haven’t had these beers, here’s the descriptions for you:

Bona Fide Imperial Stout is a collaborative effort with Goshen Coffee, a local fair trade coffee roaster. This beer is big, bold, and in your face. Bona Fide pours black as night with a smooth mouth feel. Aromas of espresso, dark chocolate, roasted malt, with nuances of vanilla. Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years. 9% ABV / 65 IBU’s

Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark. 11.5% ABV
