Sad news to report this morning. Turns out the rumors were correct, I’ve received official word that the Rotten Apple in Grafton, Illinois will be closing on January 23rd.  With Grafton being about 30 miles outside of downtown St. Louis, the Rotten Apple was more of a destination location for most people.

On a personal level, I’ve always been a big fan of the Rotten Apple.  The downstairs dining room and bar was always a warm and cozy spot to visit during the winter and the upstairs had an awesome view of the river during the summer.  Not to mention the beer.

While Jerad Gardner was running the beer program, there was always something new and exciting on tap.  You could also always count on Steve Green to tell a less than appropriate joke (my favorite kind.)  Plus, STL Hops had one of my favorite get-together/events when we took a bus up to the Beer Lovers Anonymous.

Needless to say, this is a disappointing turn of events.  I’m thinking a last trip up to the Apple may be in order.  Thoughts on a get-together on the 15th or 22nd (forgot about Cabin Fever on the 22nd)?

When I contacted Boulevard Brewing rep Laura Dale to find out if Boulevard’s newest year-round beer Single Wide IPA came in a 1/6bbl, I was shocked to have her graciously offer one up for the STL Hops Trip to the Rotten Apple (a few tickets still available.)

As cool as that was for Laura to offer it up, what I got today is even cooler.  Below is a hand written letter from Boulevard Brewmaster, Steven Pauwels given us some great information about the beer and wishing us a good trip.  Take a look:

It is a bit difficult to read, so I’ll translate it here:

To Mike Sweeney and STL Hops Members.

I hope you will enjoy this Single Wide IPA keg that Laura has here for you.

We brew this beer in a Boulevard tradition to make balanced, enjoyable beers.  This IPA is no exception and maybe to out fault made it in to a very sessionable beer.  We tried to balance the caramel slightly sweet malt notes with the floral and fruit hops character.  For a 59 IBU beer it should not take the skin off of your tongue, but rather balance between sweet and bitterness.  We used caramel and Munich malts for body and lots of Centennial and Pallisade in dry hopping for the hoppy nose.

I hope you will enjoy this Single Wide IPA and have a safe and fun trip!

Jerad sent over the final beer list for the upcoming Beer Lovers Anonymous event happening this Saturday at The Rotten Apple. This is looking like it’s going to be a pretty fun time filled with some debauchery.  The “premium” selections below will require two tickets for consumption.  You can purchase extra tickets day of the event for $1 a piece.

beerlovers_large.jpgOne of the most frequent requests of STL Hops is a bus trip up to the Rotten Apple in Grafton, IL.  Understandably, people don’t want to make a hour drive back from one of the best beer bars in the metro area.

Well, thanks to Patrick Ahrens, we’ve secured some relatively cheap transportation up to the Apple for their 2009 Beer Lovers Anonymous festival. Not only do you get to enjoy all of the ambience of the Rotten Apple, you get to enjoy some great beer at a festival and not have to drive all the way back from Grafton!

The plan is to meet up at The Stable on February 28th at 11AM and return to St. Louis about 5PM. The cost of the event is $20 and the cost of the bus will be $6, so your total cost is $26!  You can purchase tickets on Brown Paper Tickets now! There are only 33 tickets available, so you better buy quick!

Please note, these tickets are only for the STL Hops Bus Trip to the festival.  If you’re not interested in the bus trip, you must buy your tickets through The Rotten Apple.

Is that enough exclamation marks for you?
