taproomlogo_94x128.jpgThis is the big one. Schlafly has been in our lives for 20 years. For a lot of people just turning 21 this year, they’ve never known a world without Schlafly. That’s a pretty cool and scary thought for many of us.

To celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Schlafly is forgoing the standard just serving beer at 1991 prices on December 26th and making it a full weekend of celebration. Beginning on Thursday, December 22nd and running through December 26th, the Schlafly Tap Room will be selling their beers at the 1991 pricing.

There will also be live music on Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Here’s who’s playing this weekend:

Dec. 22nd 8PM – Magic City, Spelling Bee, Half Gay, TOK
Dec. 23rd 8PM – The Flying Mules, The Orbits, Fairchild
Dec. 26th 6 9:30PM – Lucky Dog Band

Schlafly will be open on Christmas Eve, with the restaurant closing at 3PM, and the bar closing at 5PM. They will be closed on Christmas Day. Come and celebrate with the fine folks at Schlafly and make sure to wish them a very happy birthday.

As the lead up to Schlafly‘s 20th Anniversary continues we’re seeing all kinds of places around town get into the birthday fun.

In this case, it’s taking a cask of Schlafly beer and serving it at Bigelo’s Bistro in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Next Monday, December 19th, starting a 6PM, Dan Kopman from Schlafly will be on hand to help tap a cask of the very special Old Ale.  But that’s not all, but beginning on the 19th and continuing up until the new year Bigelo’s will be doing a total tap takeover featuring 12 different Schlafly beers on their taps at $3 a pint. Here’s a list of just some of the beers we’ll be seeing:

  • Pale
  • Hefeweizen
  • APA
  • Oatmeal Stout
  • Biere de Garde
  • Coffee Stout
  • Christmas Ale
  • Rye IPA
  • ESB
  • Bourbon Imperial Stout
  • Oak aged Barleywine
  • Porter
  • Schwarzbier
  • Kolsch

Nothing quite like being able to celebrate Schlafly’s anniversary right in your own backyard. While you’re at Bigelo’s, make sure to ask for the very awesome STL Hops pizza.

And the good times keep rolling for our good friends at Schlafly.  The final label for the second iteration of their 20th Anniversary beer has been approved.

This beer was brewed up by the second generation of Schlafly employees and brewers. Here’s the brewers for this beer:

  • James “Otto” Ottolini
  • Claire Huelsmann
  • Sara Hale
  • Jack Petrovic
  • Paul Jensen
  • Kevin Nash

The official name for this beer is the Hop Toddy.  Schlafly Bottleworks Head Brewer James “Otto” Ottolini  has an awesome description:

“ Volume # 2 in the 20th Anniversary series for Schlafly Brand Beers is Schlafly Hop Toddy Ale. This beer was brewed by the brewers who started between 1992 and 1997. Using a local farm connection which grows raw unmalted wheat was one of the elements of this beer. It is a slightly stronger wheat beer with an ABV of 7% aged in bourbon barrels.

It has a light amber color mainly from the Honey Malt used in the brew, a heaping helping of locally grown wildflower honey as well as color pick up from char in the bourbon barrels. There is a citrus quality to this beer as well from both the use of lemon juice and Citra hops in both the kettle, whirlpool and dry-hopping.

The combination of honey, citrus and bourbon flavors is reminiscent of a Hot Toddy and was a theme from which we worked this variation. Quite frankly we don’t know what to expect from such a beer, but look forward to when it is ready. We hope you enjoy this sampling of our personal stamp on the discovery and wonder of the art of exploration in brewing.”

Or, in a second description from Otto:

“We don’t really know what this beer is going to taste like. But we look forward to trying it when it is ready. We hope you do as well.”

Here’s a couple looks at the labels and the lovely brewers who brewed the beer.
