Scottish Arms

I meant to write this up quite a while ago, but I’ve just gotten busy as of recent. So, I apologize to Ally and Patrick for not getting this up sooner. I’m guessing they’re far too busy with the Shaved Duck to even care! Also, let me apologize for the oft blurry pictures. I usually take 3 or 4 shots of something to make sure I have a good one. But all of these photos stunk.

Beers: This wouldn’t be much of a Scottish pub if they didn’t feature beer and scotch, now would it? One of the first things you notice when you look over the Scottish Arms beer list is not only the big selection of English, Irish, Scottish and domestic beers, but also how reasonable the prices are. All draught beers are 20oz and all and except one are $5.50 a pint. I’ll provide the whole list of beers after the jump at the bottom of the post.

Food: Not only does the Scottish Arms offer tradition pub food such as Bangers and Mash and Fish and Chips (the fish breading is made with 6 different types of beer!) but more upscale fare as well.

Intangibles: I’ve never been to Europe (one of these days I’ll make it happen) but when I walked into the Scottish Arms it just felt like the UK Pubs of my imagination. It’s a warm and inviting place with people that truly care about beer.

hands down my favorite pub in st Louis. i’ve been to a number in Ireland and England and this is pretty spot on. McGurks is pretty close but their draft selection kind of honks and is filled with college frat boys.

The beer is primarily imported and that is what I would expect. I know I will always have a great pint in a nice cozy atmosphere that is fun for all ages. I enjoy seeing people in their 60’s and 20’s all mingling and having a great time. The music in the dining area gets a tad loud so it can be difficult to eat and talk.

My only beef is that the curry sauce for the chips really tastes nothing like chip shop curry. for the love of god, get some bisto! I also prefer the “steak cut” chips vs. the potato chip style chips. The fried Mars bar is both a heart attack and awesome.

I went with my brother-in-law about a month ago. It was great.

The Wee Heavy on tap was crazy good, especially since we drank most of our Imperial Pints before the Scotch Eggs came. Ohh…so tasty.

I had the Shepherd’s Pie. Very earthy and delicious with the veggies and lamb. The brother-in-law had haggis.

I was very impressed by the looks, service, selection, food, price and drinks.

i love the Scottish Arms. I anxiously awaited their opening oh so many years back…now I am eagerly awaiting the shaved duck. If I was riding my bike lately, I would be the kid that has a crush and constantly ride my bike back and forth and do lazy slow circles in front–in the hopes that they would let me in. Instead, i just drive by and make Simon slow down so we can peek. The other day I went and just knocked and made them let me in….just so I could see the place. I can’t wait.
