While I’d rather see these two alcoholic beverages unite rather than divide, I will say that the friendly smack talk between Karen King of Perennial Artisan Ales and Kyle Harsha of Harsha Wines was very humorous and a lot of fun. Not surprisingly beer was the overall winner in this friendly competition, though it wasn’t a blowout. Here’s the break down:

Cheese course: Parmesan broth with winter root veg
Wine: 2009 Sartarelli “Tralivio” Verdicchio (Le Marche, Italy)
Beer: Southside Blonde
(Beer wins 9-8)

Fruit course: Grits, scallops, blueberries
Wine: 2010 Chateau Roulerie Anjou Rose’ (Anjou, France)
Beer: Saison de Lis
(Beer wins 9-8)

Nut course: Black walnut mole, lamb loin, shiitakes.
Wine: 2010 Nabucco (Yecla, Spain)
Beer: Black Walnut Dunkel
Beer wins (13-4)

Dessert: Bitter orange cake
Wine: NV Pavan Moscato (Veneto, Italy)
Beer: Heart of Gold
(Wine wins 12-5)

Wine was definitely playing against a homecourt advantage when Kyle walked into a brewery, but still had a very respectable showing. The response I heard over and over again was, “I could have picked either one.” So, well done to everyone, it was a very fun time. Here are some photos from the event:
