O’Fallon Whiskey Barrel Smoked Porter News

12:09 pm Beer News

beer-174_1280x960.jpgDave Johnson from O’Fallon Brewery posted that they’re going to begin bottling the Whiskey Barrel Smoked Porter. What’s especially exciting about this news is that if you read Sara White’s recent article about aging beer in bourbon barrels in Sauce Magazine you’ll know that this batch was aged in 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve bourbon barrels. Turns out this isn’t the batch that was aged in the 23 year old barrels, this is just the normal Jim Beam Buffalo Trace barrels. Sorry about that, it’s still exciting stuff though.

Dave is hoping that this will start going out to stores by Friday, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. As soon as it’s out I’ll be certain to let everyone know.

Thanks to Sam for the tip.

    Hey Mike,
Thanks for tipping folks off, but there’s just one or two corrections I’d like to make.

These barrels were not Jim Beam barrels; they were Buffalo Trace Ancient Age barrels. The first batch we did last year had aged in a Jim Beam barrels, but we are pretty much sold on trying to use Buffalo Trace now as often as possible.

Secondly, the main bulk of the 31 cases available locally will be hitting stores’ shelves Thursday. If you’re reading this website, then you no doubt know which retailers to check with for this beer. In addition, it’s a good idea to call the store first before driving there. Also, keep in mind that many retailers will most likely limit purchases to 2 bottles per customer.

One very cool distinction from last year is that there will be 3 bars carrying it this year–33 Wine Bar, Cicero’s and Iron Barley.

    Enjoy!

Derek beat me to it about the Ancient Age Barrels. I’m still in shock this didn’t take a medal at GABF…what a masterpiece.
Cool, those are three of the best beer bars in the city.
