Mo’ breweries means mo’ representation at the Great American Beer Festival which was held this past weekend in downtown Denver. While not only being an enormous beer festival it also doubles as a competition for professional breweries.  The St. Louis area did pretty well this year as it had three local craft winners:

  • Category 13: Other Strong Beer (55 Entries) – Silver: Heart of GoldPerennial Artisan Ales, St. Louis, MO
  • Category 40: German-Style Schwarzbier (32 Entries) – Bronze: Black BearMorgan Street Brewery, St. Louis, MO
  • Category 84: Barley Wine-Style Ale (51 Entries) – Silver: Barley WineCharleville Microbrewery, Ste. Genevieve, MO

It’s also worth noting that a couple of other Missouri breweries walked away with some awards as well:

  • Category 10: Rye Beer (62 Entries) – Silver: Kyles Baltic PorterFlat Branch Pub and Brewery, Columbia, MO
  • Category 13: Other Strong Beer (55 Entries) – Gold: Reverb PilsnerBoulevard Brewing, Kansas City, MO
  • Category 68: Belgian-Style Witbier (50 Entries) – Gold: ZONBoulevard Brewing, Kansas City, MO

Winning an award at a beer competition takes a little bit of luck but a hell of a lot of skill. Congrats to the boys at Perennial (Phil, Cory, and Jim), Morgan Street head brewer Dustin Chalfant and Charleville head brewer Tony Saballa on their very impressive wins. I’m sure we’ll see even more awards next year.
