Our long local nightmare is over. Bell’s Brewery Hopslam has finally landed in St. Louis. As I said in my most recently article in Feast Magazine, this beer is consistently one of the most popular and most sought after beers in this area. There is always a huge amount of excitement and celebration each January.
I don’t currently have a full list of establishments that are getting it or have got it, but if you’re aware of the usual suspects, I’d call to see if they have it before heading over. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this crazy hoppy double IPA, here’s a description from Bell’s:
Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repetoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.
I’ll be perfectly frank, I’ve never been a huge Hopslam fan. But for some reason, I’m always sucked into the hype. I don’t know what you put in that beer to make me crave it every year, but well done Bell’s.
Feel free to use the comment section of this post to report any Hopslam sightings.
