Growlers Pub 2008 Winter Menu
October 2, 2008 12:37 pm Beer NewsWay back in June I told everyone about some of the beers I had tasted at Growlers Pub twice yearly tasting event. How did Growler’s do? Let’s find out:

Draught
- Spanish Peaks Crystal Weiss
- Breckenridge Avalanche
- Breckenridge 471 IPA
- Boulevard Bully Porter
- Leinenkugel Creamy Dark
- Kona Fire Rock
Bottle:
- Lemp Lager
- Anchor Porter
- Arcadia Coco Loco
- Bridgeport ESB
- Ommegang Rare Vos
- Bridgeport IPA
- O’Dells 5 Barrel
- Left Hand Haystack Wheat
- Left Hand Polster
- Left Hand Jackman
- Left Hand Sawtooth
- Left Hand Milk Stout
- Rogue Hazelnut Brown
- O’Fallon Gold
- Spanish Peaks Black Dog
- Avery Ellie’s Brow
- Avery IPA
- Samuel Smith Imperial Stout
- Samuel Smith Organic Lager
- Samuel Smith India Pale
- Old Peculiar
- Ayinger Celebrator
- Ayinger Dunkel
- Bitburger
- Gouden Carlous Ambrio
- Pilsner Urquell
- Beamish
- Peroni
I don’t know about you but, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Just as a refresher here are a few beers from the tasting back in June:
- Avery Hog Heaven
- Arcadia Coco Loco
- Het Anker Gouden Carolus Carolus D’Or - CuvĂ©e Van De Keizer
- Great Divide Yeti
- De Proefbrouwerij - Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale
- O’Fallon Smoke
- Great Divide Hercules
- Left Hand Milk Stout
- Arcadia Hopmouth
So basically of the beers I tried, two made the cut. How sad is it that I walk into a restaurant with over 130 beers and I usually order the same two beers? I think that’s why I like places like The Stable so much, while it’s awesome they have one of my favorite beers on draught, I find that I only have one glass of it before wanting to try another beer. Growlers has 32 draught beers and changed out 6? Weak.
It looks like their continuing price gouging on Ommegang beers continues, Rare Vos is still $11.25. We also have five Left Hand choices? Seems a bit excessive to me. Nothing against Left Hand, but we get 5 Left Hand beers and no Bear Republic or Great Divide? This list is making me pretty angry and I think it’s just a continuing example that Growlers knows very little about beer and doesn’t have any interest in learning.

Agreed. I dozed off just reading the list. Nothing I enjoy more than a Haystack Wheat on those cold winter days. Guess that’s why I don’t go here but once a year.

I thought I might try to fill one of their cards where you try all the beers, but there’s just no way. Mmm…Hopmouth. I need to head back to The Stable soon.

I would characterize this list as very suburban. I think that’s who they play to and it seems they do a pretty good business at it. Growler’s is a place where Bud Lighters can experiment and that’s about all.
I rank it similar to going into Sam Goody and looking for underground punk. You just aren’t going to find it.

Wow, thanks for the honesty! I live right around the corner from that place and it’s a real disappointment. Provisions is right across the street, I can get almost any beer I want there, so why bother with Growlers. It seems as though its turned into more of a sports bar and not a beer nut’s place.

And they don’t even sell growlers to go…. not that I would want one from their crappy selection.
Seriously, someone needs to talk to them about their selection.

It seems to me that the beer selection is just one symptom of generally poor management. The quality of service and food both fluctuate wildly in my experience.

I hate Growlers. I cringe everytime I get stuck going there with a group. The south county location’s primary goal is to appeal to wannabe hipsters who like to play dress up in faux expensive clothing, sit on the patio, and pretend like they’re starring in an episode of “The Hills”. Stella Artois is probably their cash cow at the moment. 5 years ago, probably Heineken, and 5 years from now it will be something wildly different… like Grolsch. If Yuengling ever makes it to St. Louis, it will be an instant wannabe hipster favorite. I would put money on that.
Growler’s has no incentive or need to change when they’re probably raking in money hand over fist.

Cubby’s last line was what I was just coming to post.

There happen to be a work happy hour here Friday (Olive location). From this list, I thought I would drink the Celebrator, but at $8.95 a bottle, I don’t think so. So I had a 5 Day, Schlafly APA and a 471. Also, there is a growler price listed for all their draught choies, but ahs anyone ever seen anyone purchase one? I think not.

The growlers are for in-store purchase. the steal of that new menu is hennepin, they missed printed the price like it’s for the 11.2 oz. bottle, they’re selling it for $5
