Growlers Pub 2008 Winter Menu Tasting
June 25, 2008 12:58 pm Beer News
I made a decision before attending Monday night’s beer tasting at Growler’s, this was probably going to be my last tasting. Growler’s recent beer menus have left a bit to be desired. It seems like the same beers over and over again mixed with a few light lagers to really spice things up. But if the this most recent tasting is a sign of things to come, I may have to change my mind. Just a few beers I remember from the tasting:
- Avery Hog Heaven
- Arcadia Coco Loco
- Het Anker Gouden Carolus Carolus D’Or - Cuvée Van De Keizer
- Great Divide Yeti
- De Proefbrouwerij - Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale
- O’Fallon Smoke
- Great Divide Hercules
- Left Hand Milk Stout
- Arcadia Hopmouth
Imperial IPAs? Imperial Stouts? Wild Ales? Was this the same Growler’s I’ve been going to for the past 5 years? And sure, that Wild Ale isn’t the more funky wild beer you’ll ever find, but it’s a step in the right direction! Let’s just hope some of these beers make it onto the final beer list. We’ll have to wait until September to find out for sure.

Are the beer lineups at all the sites the same? This list looks like they may have some understanding that they need to get their offerings into shape to compete.

Could someone from growlers have possibly read the discussion about their selection on this site?!?

On a side note, I thought I saw a recent Wine and Cheese update note that they have Mikkeller Jackie Brown. Are you all now seeing Mikkeller in the St Louis area? If so, any others?

I was wondering the same thing about whether they realize that if they want the “passionate” beer guy to be a steady customer that they better keep up with what is starting to happen in this town. It looks like maybe they are getting the hint.
On that side note I know I saw Mikkeller Jackie Brown and Beer Geek Breakfast on the menu at 33.

I’m just chiming in with the rest of you, you are right about the selection there getting stale even season over season—I’m a “Royal Order of Tasters” mug holder at the Creve Coeur location (so I get a free draft pint there every Tues.), but I haven’t even felt like coming in….and another thing! Their beer prices are too high! It’s way cheaper to go many other places for the exact same beers (for bottled).
Related note: Now that Granite City has fired and replaced their brewmaster with someone better, their beer has significantly improved from where it was when they started (it was rather weak and insipid, frankly), and I’ve been getting their big $3.99 mug of beer from right across the street, rather than go to Growlers. I rather like their Brother Benedict’s Bock. The problem with GC is that they really have NO selection whatsoever, so if you’re a beer explorer, it’s a boring situation.

Mikkeler is starting to arrive. I have the others on order, hopefully in the next week or two. There has been a hold up with red tape by the state.

The Wine and Cheese Place
(so far we just have the Jackie Brown at Clayton and Rock Hill)

Just heard a funny story about Growler’s.
A good friend recently applied for an executive position in the company. As the owners were interviewing her, they confided in her–presumably because they thought she was on the same page–that they also owned a snow removal company, and would just as soon blow snow as sell beer. Kinda shows, doesn’t it?
