From the Mailbag: Lion Stout

I live in St. Louis, but I used to tend bar at a place in Wisconsin that housed a selection of over 450 beers. While there, I developed a love of a Sri Lankan beer called Lion Stout. I am desperately trying to locate some of this beer in St. Louis, but so far with no luck. I was hoping maybe you knew of a place that carries Lion stout, or at least knew of a place that might. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.Â

I believe I’ve had it at Erato on Main which means it’s available in Illinois at the very least.

The company that makes it (lionbrand.com) also makes Carlsberg, so I imagine you could find it at Lukas, Randalls, or Whole Foods. If not, I am sure they could order you some.

I have not seen it in Missouri, but it’s widely distributed. Try Illinois. We used to get it in Michigan.

I checked their website, the are not in Missouri yet, they are in Illinois and mostly east of us (Colorado the exception).

I’ve seen it at Corral Liquors in Granite City.
It’s the only beer that I’ve ever seen that had Michael Jackson’s actual face on the packaging, endorsing the beer. Impressive.

I too have seen this beer at Corral in Granite City, though I don’t know if they still have it …
I also happen to have two 330ml bottles in the cellar as well

I would love try find that same beer, I’ve wanted to try it for some time. Have you ever tried Okocim Porter, Schalfly Export Stout, or Flying Dog Gonzo Porter. Those are all high alcohol dark beers which are fairly easy to find in St Louis.

Lion Stout is not available (yet) in Missouri. And, I thought it was from New Zealand, not Sri Lanka.
Anyway, as others have mentioned, it seems to be available accross The Big Muddy in Flatland territory!

I just got a response from the importer. They are in the process of registering with Missouri. We will be able to get Lion Stout soon! I am sure it is still about a month or two away.
