Cask 5 Day IPA at Dressel’s Pub
July 22, 2008 9:37 am Beer News
Maybe the guys at CAMRA have finally gotten to me and programed my brain in my sleep to really believe it, but I’m pretty obsessed with cask beer. The slightly warm, slightly flat that always brings more than a slight smile to my face. One of the problems with cask is that it’s pretty hard to find in St. Louis. For the longest time it was basically available at either the Tap Room or Iron Barley (and from what I gathered Square One on rare occasions.) But now it looks like we have another location for “true” ale:
Dave Johnson from O’Fallon Brewery emailed me to let me know that cask 5-Day IPA is now available at Dressel’s Pub. Cask beer at a Welsh pub? Sounds like a winning combination to me.

Why is their website so bad and why does it just list horrible reviews of them??

Their website is pretty terrible. I could probably make a decent living just designing new websites for a lot of restaurants and I know nothing about web design.

wtf? is that really their site? why would they post terrible reviews on their website?
Also, every link on their website, directions, menu, etc, all just go back to the home page.

jeez, the more I look at it, the worse it is. There isn’t even a phone number on the site to call them. Who designed this website, a pissed of third grader?

You know what, that’s NOT their website. That must be a site someone set up by someone they pissed off. Their website is http://www.dresselspublichouse.com/

Good catch, cubby. I’ve made the change.

If they think they can get my business by just hosting a cask of 5 Day, they think right.

Haven’t been in for a couple of months, but they had usually have two beers from Felinfoel, Fuller’s London Porter, Guinness and Strongbow cider on tap. I’ve seen several craft beers on tap over the years too - New Belgium (one of the few places that had Blue Paddle), Boulevard and Schlafly. I don’t know if there’s a rhyme or reason to their rotation, or what’s on now.

Thanks, Dave! I’ve added them to my list of places to check out. I can’t keep up, plus work on my Growler’s card.

I had it with my lunch today, but it was hard to choose between that and one of the stouts that’s new on the list. Decided IPA was a better choice with blue cheese and bacon chicken salad.
They’ve usually got 7-10 good things on tap, good chips, good salads (green goddess dressing). And they’ll cook your burger rare if you ask real nice.

Please stop by and have a pint. But also try the cask and the 5 Day side by side. They most likely came out of the same batch, BUT were conditioned differently so they are completely different. BTW it is not branded cask 5 Day, it’s O’Fallon Cask IPA.

Dressel’s is one of my favorite places to eat in St. Louis–you’ll see. Their chips are the best! And everything is served in the correct glass. If you order a Delirium Tremens, they will bring you the DT glass. Maudite? The same. The hefe they carry (I forget what brand) comes in THAT brand’s tall hefeweizen glass. Also, their beer is always fresh.
What’s the downside? It’s rather $$ to eat there, even when I go by myself and get a chicken sandwich, chips, and 2 drinks, I’m always out $30. Beers are $7 or $8 apiece…it really adds up.
If you go there, and sit at the bar, my favorite bartender is John. You’ll know him by his mane of grey hair and matching beard, his matter-of-fact-tolerate-no-nonsense-I’m-not-your therapist-so-don’t-be-too-chatty service, and his often scowling countenance. But: He serves up a mean whisky sour, and is one well-read man.
They all work together in there, and share all tables and tips equally, so this can sometimes affect how long you have to wait for different things. Since everyone serves you, don’t be afraid to grab just anyone who walks by, and tell them what you want. Sitting and fuming about your service will get you nowhere there. It is real casual and laid back–remember, you’re not at Tony’s, or the Monarch, or at the Sidney Street Cafe, here.

Good point on the service, Trish. I find the system works quite well once you overcome the reluctance to ask anyone for anything. John is pure class and a true St. Louis bartending icon.

Interesting to read all the feedback when it’s about you! Just wanted to add a couple notes about the website and what Dressel’s is up to. Thanks for picking up the correct site Mike, Dresselspub.com is indeed someone I pissed off many years ago when the pub was going to be sold. Our new sight, http://www.dresselspublichouse.com will soon feature our beer, wine and drink list, including 35 or so single malts scotches. Our Chef, Joe Hemp, is young and talented and we’re doing our best to cover a wide variety keeping old school folks happy but giving the gastro pub thing a true run for the money. I’m comitted to working with the best craft brewers I can find, Left Hand, O’Fallon, Arcadia (coming soon)Unibrue, Felinfoel from Wales, New Belgium etc. Seasonal rotations with a lineup that’s a little more ale centered. I feel like Dressel’s is one of the few places anywhere that is 110% committed to being a true pub in all senses of the word. Thanks to everyone for supporting us it’s great to hear feedback on all levels. Cheers.
