Sunday-Funkday-Poster-Web-9-27A lot of people talk about trends in craft beer. One of those trends are funky and sour beers. But let’s be honest, funky beers aren’t a trend, they’re the original beers.

Before the days of stainless steel and caustic, beers were aged in wood and inoculated in the open air. These beers were funky from the get-go. This isn’t a trend, it’s revisiting how beer used to be made.

To celebrate these funky beers, the International Tap House in Soulard is throwing a Sunday Funkfest this Sunday, May 31st beginning at 12PM. Here’s the line-up of beers:

  • 4 Hands Cuvee Diable
  • 4 Hands Cuvee Ange
  • New Belgium La Folie
  • New Belgium Eric’s Ale
  • New Belgium Le Terroir
  • Prairie Elizabeth
  • Nogne O Kriek Of Telemark
  •  Mikkeller Spontanhibiscus
  • De Proefbrouwerij Sour Barrel #2

Celebrate the original beers this Sunday at iTAP.

HopShop_IG_2I always appreciate when people new to the game pay reverence to what came before them. The Saint Louis Hop Shop understands not only recognizing the past, but also what it means to be part of a community.

To this end, the Hop Shop is partnering with the St. Louis Swap Meet to put on a very special event this Friday and Saturday night. From 5PM-9PM you’ll be able to visit the Lemp Brewery and not only enjoy the Saint Louis Hop Shop Biergarten, but also enjoy food from area food trucks and merchandise from local vendors.

Entrance is free and window shopping the vendors is always free.  Head out to Lemp Brewery this Friday and Saturday to enjoy this taste of new and old.

grimm-cbcCraft Beer Cellar in Clayton is throwing a special event tonight featuring Grimm Artisanal Ales, beginning at 5PM.  Not only are you going to be able to sample through a few special beers from Grimm, but they’ve got a very special glass up their sleeve.

CBC will be pouring through Super Going, a Dry Hopped Orange Gose, Rainbow Dome, a Dry Hopped Wild Ale with Apricots, and Psychokinesis, a Dry Hopped Sour. These are super rare kegs, so this may be your only chance to try these beers.

But even more rare may be the special glasses that Grimm provided. This very cool stemware is limited and is sure not to last long. Tonight’s event runs from 5-9PM, so get there to sample not only some rare beer, but also get a nifty glass to boot.

iTAP-80s-Draft2I could sit here and lament that the 80’s were THIRTY YEARS AGO and realize how old I feel.  Instead, I think I’d rather extrapolate how much the world has changed for craft beer in 30 years.

There were 110 breweries in 1985. This year we will probably see over 4000.  The amount of choice we have is staggering. And without a doubt, one of the establishments that helped to kick off this plethora of choice in St. Louis is the International Tap House in Chesterfield.

iTAP Chesterfield wants to throw a party to celebrate all things 80’s. This Saturday, September 26th at 7PM iTAP is throwing a Totally 80’s Bash.

They’re going to have 80’s music and some “bodacious” breweries that got their start in the 80’s including Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Boulevard, Odell, and Goose Island.  Here’s the line-up of beers:

  • Odell Oak Haven (Bourbon Barrel Aged Tree Shaker)
  • Sierra Nevada Narwhal (Russian Imperial Stout)
  • Breckenridge Vanilla Porter
  • Bell’s Hell Hath No Fury
  • Goose Island Apple Radler
  • North Coast Barrel Aged Old Rasputin
  • Boulevard Saison Brett

They’re encouraging 80’s fashion and there might be some late night karaoke to boot. So break out your Jams, your Swatch Watch, and your Member’s Only jacket and head out to iTAP on Saturday night.

I’ve often said, it takes a real German to put on an authentic Oktoberfest. OK, I don’t I’ve ever said that, but I say a lot of things when I’ve had a few beers that I rarely remember, so it may still be something I’ve said.

But it’s got to be true, right? I mean, when the Urban Chestnut Brewing Company‘s brewmaster Florian Kuplent is straight out of Munich, the home of the original Oktoberfest, so he and the crew at UCBC have the skills to put on an authentic festival.

Well, this Saturday and Sunday is your chance to find out that UCBC has what it takes to put on an authentic style Oktoberfest here in your own back yard. Here are the details for this weekend’s event:
