Archive for June, 2013

buffalologo.gifIn news that was not unexpected, but still remains disappointing I’ve been told that Buffalo Brewing Company in Midtown is now out of business. The restaurant and brewery, which has been in midtown since 2008, closed its doors as of end of business on Saturday, June 22nd.

While never making a huge splash in the St. Louis beer scene, Buffalo had two excellent head brewers in Dave Johnson and later Dan Stauder. They also created some homegrown talent with brewers Jerid Saffell and Drew Hurter brewing some beer there. In fact, the Buffalo Rye IPA did quite well during the 2010 and 2011 St. Louis Beer Challenge STL Hops puts on each year.

But out of the ashes arises a new brewery. As was originally reported on STL Today, the brewing equipment will be moving to Granite City where the new Six Mile Brewery and Smokehouse will be opening with new ownership in the near future.

I wish luck to the new owners and hope that the equipment will be used to keep churning out some tasty beer.

Today, from 4PM to 6PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting in which they will be pouring: Ruhstaller 1881 Hop Ranch, Ruhstaller Capt. Black IPA, Excel Citra, Evil Twin Low Life, Nomada Royal Porter, Flying Monkey Amber, and Flying Monkey 4 Finger. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Today, from 4PM to 6PM the Wine and Cheese Place on New Ballas will hold a special Friday beer tasting to celebrate the store’s expanded selection. They’ll be sampling: Perennial / Half Acre Plan B, Perennial Woodside Tripel, Perennila Aria, Ommegang Fleur to Houblon, Ommegang Gnomegang, Stift Engelszell Benno Trappistenbier, Stillwater Cellar Door, Deschutes / Great Lakes Smoked Porter, ‘tSmisje Calva Reserva Valeir Donker, and Hantverksbryggeriet Baronen Barley Wine. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cathedral Square’s Jerad Gardner will be at the Schnucks Butler Hill from 3-5PM today and Dierbergs Heritage Crossing 1-3PM tomorrow. He’ll be sampling a variety of Cathedral Square’s products. Go on out and say “hi” to Jerad.

This Saturday, Wolfbrau in St. Peters continues its “Wolfbrau’s Taste of Beer.” On select Saturdays, Wolfbrau will be featuring a single style or brewery to feature. This Saturday, from 4PM to 6PM, they’ll be featuring Jim McGinn from Missouri Beverage, representing Weihenstephan. For more information, be sure to check out their Facebook page.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

logo1If you’re looking for the most authentic version of Neapolitan pizza in St. Louis, then you really need to visit The Good Pie. The blistered crust of these pizzas are cooked in a wood-burning oven that reaches over 900 degrees.  This is old school pizza, the original.

Some would argue (like me) that cask beer is old school as well.  Lighter carbonation, a little warmer, it’s the way beer way served for centuries before we had modern conveniences like CO2 draft systems and refrigeration.

Pairing these old school classics together, this Friday, June 28th, starting a 12PM, the Good Pie will be tapping a cask of the New Belgium 1554. They’ll be serving it until the cask runs out or The Good Pie closes.

I believe this is the first cask of 1554 available in St. Louis and you can get Neapolitan Pizza to go along with it! Sounds like a classic pairing.

I’m proud to announce that the fourth-annual St. Louis Craft Beer Week will be returning for 2013. This will be over a week long event beginning on July 27th and culminating on August 4th.

This year’s STLCBW, as always, will be put on by a group of breweries, distributors, restaurants, bars, retail outlets, and beer fans all working together to promote and enjoy craft beer.

Last year we had over 60 events that took place over 9 days.  We had trivia nights, cask events, tap take overs, and beer dinners.  Plans are already in the works for events including St. Louis’s second annual Midwest Belgian Beer Festival hosted by Perennial Artisan Ales, the Herbst Brewing Symposium, and the Schurcipefones Closing Ceremonies at The Bridge. But we’re always interested in hearing your suggestions.

If you’re a restaurant/bar, retail facility, distributor or brewery that would like  please contact me at mike@stlhops.com or mike@stlbeerweek.com.

If years of watching PBS as a child has taught me anything it’s that education is a wonderful thing. You know what makes learning even better? Beer.

Global Brew Tap House knows that beer and education are a natural mix so they’ve tapped (pun intended) their own Certified Cicerone Zachary Pohlman to lead beer school classes twice a month at their two locations. The classes run from 6:30-8PM and will cost you $15 which will provide five 5oz samples per person.

Classes take place the first and third Monday of every month at the O’Fallon location and the first and third Wednesday at the Edwardsville location. Each class will offer something new and exciting, here’s a look at next week’s classes:

Monday, July 1 (O’Fallon): Beers of Summer
Sierra Nevada Summerfest
Bell’s Oberon
4 Hands Single Speed
Summit Summer Ale
Anderson Valley Summer Solstice
Wednesday, July 3 (Edwardsville): Cathedral Square Brewery (w/ Jerad)
Belgian-Style White Ale
Belgian-Style Abbey Ale
Repent Rye
Holy Moly
Ave Maria

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves and St. Charles (and also now in Wildwood!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will feature a Boulevard Tap Takeover offering Sasion Brett, Coffee Ale, Dry Stout, Tank 7, and 80 Acre all on tap. While the St. Charles location will be serving up the Crown Valley Strawberry Cider on draft and the Wildwood location will have Goose Island Sofie Paradisi on tap tonight. So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles, Wildwood or Webster tonight!
