Archive for May, 2013

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves and St. Charles (and also now in Wildwood!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will have Left Hand Twin Sisters on tap. While the St. Charles location will be serving up the Leinenkugel Canoe Paddler on draft and the Wildwood location will have Green Flash Saison Diego on tap tonight. So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles, Wildwood or Webster tonight!

Here’s a list of upcoming beer events:

Today, from 4PM to 6PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting in which they will be pouring: Grand Teton Oud Bruin, Chatoe Rogue Roguenbier Rye Ale, Stift Engelszell Benno Trappistenbier, and 4 Hands Centennial Red. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cathedral Square’s Jerad Gardner will be at the Cheshire from 10AM-12PM tomorrow. He’ll be sampling a variety of Cathedral Square’s products. Go on out and say “hi” to Jerad.

This Saturday, Wolfbrau in St. Peters continues its “Wolfbrau’s Taste of Beer.” On select Saturdays, Wolfbrau will be featuring a single style or brewery to feature. This Saturday, from 4PM to 6PM, they’ll be featuring Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. For more information, be sure to check out their Facebook page.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

For those of you that don’t pay attention to the forums, or Twitter, or local newspapers, one of the greatest battles of all time took place last Saturday. No, it wasn’t our St. Louis Cardinals beating the Colorado Rockies, it took place one block west of Busch Stadium at the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium.

The Flying Saucer awards a special plate for people in their UFO Club who have drank 200 different beers on the menu. Five gentlemen were all vying for the first plate at this Flying Saucer location. But, there’s a catch. One “gentleman” was a Kansas City Royal fan. Joe Hoffmann was determined to have the first plate and use that plate as a reminder of the notorious 1985 World Series.

A group of St. Louis Cardinals fans were not going to let that happen and nominated Richard Haegele to champion our cause and drink 3 beers per day for 67 days in a row to take Joe down. It was a battle called the I-70 Saucer Showdown.

Joe and Richard weren’t alone in this battle though, three other gentlemen made it through 67 grueling days and made it to the final contest. And what a contest it was. This showdown consisted of four rounds that included Beer Knowledge Trivia, Flip Cup, Coaster Castle, and the final round where the last two standing had to name beers off of their list of 200 without repeating.

I’d love to say that we were victorious. I’d love to say that Joe lost. But the beer gods were smiling down on St. Louis, but Joe won. But, a lot of money was raised for charity and at least the Cardinals won on Saturday all while the Royals lost. Small victories my friends, small victories.

sourcellarIt’s been a long time coming, but as we all know, good things come to those who wait. I received word this afternoon that the Schlafly Tap Room has cracked into one of those beautiful barrels they have in their “sour cellar” and that they will be releasing a Flanders Red this Friday, May 17th.

I wrote up the original post about Schlafly re-using their bourbon barrels way back on August 2nd, 2010. This was kind of a new venture for Schlafly so they wanted to take their time and get a feel for it. This first beer is one of my favorite sour styles and I’m very excited to see what the folks at the Tap Room have cooked up.

This will go on tap as of 11AM on Friday. The beer is 5% ABV, originally had 15 IBUs, and according to Schlafly brewer Brennan Greene, “On (a) scale of 1-10, (10 being the most sour beer I’ve ever had,) this is a 4 or 5.”

There will be no kegs available of this and they’re still deciding on growlers. Your best bet is to stop by the Tap Room and grab yourself a glass along with a bite to eat. You won’t go wrong.

maifest_logoIt’s been 7 long months since we all got our schnitzel on during the Oktoberfest celebrations around the area. But the International Tap House in Chesterfield is wondering why “October gets all of the fun?”

On May 17 & 18th, iTAP Chesterfield will throw their 5th annual Maifest to celebrate all things (well, maybe not all things) German. There will be plenty of brats, bands, and most importantly: beer.

Plenty of German beer will be available including Hofbrau Original, Hefeweizen, Maibock, and also the Doppelbock Delicator. You’ll also get some locally made German styles from our friends at Urban Chestnut and The Civil Life Brewing.

This year they’re also introducing a beer festival inside of a beer festival (how very Inception-esque) that they’re calling Geschmack.  From 2PM-6PM on Saturday the 18th, you’ll have a chance to sample over 30 different beers from UCBC, New Belgium, Stone, Firestone Walker, Schlafly, Charleville, Odell, Bells, 4 Hands, 2nd Shift, Civil Life, Boulevard, Founders, and more!  Tickets can still be purchased at iTAP Chesterfield at a special discounted rate of $25 until tomorrow.  Then the price goes up to $30.

For those looking for some music, here’s the line-up:

4-7pm: Music by Town Drunks

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will have New Holland’s White Hatter on tap. While the St. Charles location will be serving up the Avery Maharaja on draft and the Wildwood location will have Deschutes Chainbreaker on tap tonight. So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles, Wildwood or Webster tonight!
