Today, from 4PM to 6PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting in which they’ll hosting Kerry from Perennial Artisan Ales. Here’s what Kerry will be pouring: Aria, Black Walnut Dunkel, Saison de Lis, and Hommel. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cathedral Square’s Jerad Gardner will be at the Schnucks in Columbia from 3-5PM today and a tasting at Schnucks Bridgeton on Saturday from 1-3PM. He’ll be sampling a variety of Cathedral Square’s products. Go on out and say “hi” to Jerad.

This Saturday, Wolfbrau in St. Peters continues its “Wolfbrau’s Taste of Beer.” On select Saturdays, Wolfbrau will be featuring a single style or brewery to feature. This Saturday, from 4PM to 6PM, they’ll be featuring Stone Brewing out of San Diego, CA. For more information, be sure to check out their Facebook page.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

stlhopswikiWelcome back to the STL Hops 2013 St. Louis Beer Challenge! With March Madness starting today, I thought it would be fun to have a contest to see how local beers would do in a tournament. Thanks to an influx of new breweries, we now have a tournament featuring beers from within 75 miles of downtown St. Louis.

Now, a few things. First, don’t make any judgment about the rankings. I just randomized it and then did a bit of sorting so a brewery didn’t face off against itself in the first round. Second, as we have a bunch of new breweries and new beers, there might be something I missed. I’m sorry if I missed you, it wasn’t on purpose.

If you’re curious how I picked the beers, here’s the method behind my madness. We’re doing something slightly new this year thanks to a little feedback I received.  This year there are four distinct brackets: Black/Brown, Hoppy, Belgian, and Wildcard.  I tried my best to make sure each brewery in the area was represented in each of these brackets.

I heard a couple of people say it was difficult to pit a stout vs an IPA.  I can understand that, so by grouping things a little bit, maybe it will make you decision easier (or harder.) Wildcard is exactly as it sounds, if a beer didn’t fit into one of the other brackets, it went into here.

If I did this right, you won’t have to mix styles too much until you hit the final four.  (This is a big if, I set this up on very little sleep.)

You may also notice that some of your favorite seasonal and one-off beers aren’t on the list. For the most part, I tried to stick with two year-round beer from each brewery and one season. As not everyone gets a chance to try a lot of the one-off or seasonal beers, thought it would be more fair with the year round releases.

Now, for the serious stuff. Even after the unpleasantness from a couple of years ago, I’m sticking with the Bracketeers website. It’s still the best website I can find to make this process easy for me and you, so we’ll stick with it.

Please, I remind everyone again not to take this too seriously, it’s just for fun.
Round Dates:
Round 1 – Thu Mar 21
Round 2 – Mon Mar 24
Round 3 – Thu Mar 28
Round 4 – Mon Mar 31
Round 5 – Thu Apr 4
Championship – Mon Apr 8

So, good luck to everyone and have fun! (If you can’t see the poll below, click on this link to visit the website hosting it.)

It’s that time, for your installment of label art. There are some exciting things hopefully coming to your local bottle shop, including your favorite sours from Goose Island in large format bottles! Yep, that’s right: 765mL bottles.  Not the entire line up, seems Lolita hasn’t either been approved or isn’t making the large  format bottle.

Enough of this chatter, lets get to the labels.

Enjoy & Cheers!!

**As always, disclaimer time** The labels here aren’t a guarantee we will see these beers in STL or even in the Metro East. Please view with caution and enjoy!

ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant begins their Winter Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM and a second class from 7PM-8PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school is being hosted by Jerry Pratzwald from Hofbräu. Jerry will be on hand to discuss and sample Hofbräu Original, Hefe and Dunkel as well as Staropramen Golden Lager. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at Cicerosbeerschool.com.

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves (and also now in St. Charles!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will have Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye on tap. While the St. Charles location will be serving up the New Belgium Lips of Faith – Heavenly Feijoa Tripel on draft. So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles or Webster tonight!

bassoSo of you may remember way back in December when I showed off some of the photos of the newest (and possibly nicest) places in St. Louis to grab a pint: Basso.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit this unique space, a Samuel Adams tap takeover may be exactly the push you need to stop in. This Wednesday, March 20th (beginning at 5PM) Basso will be featuring a variety of Sam Adams beers to whet your palate. Here’s a list:

  • Cherry Wheat
  • Double Agent IPL
  • New Albion 1/6bbl
  • Dark Depths
  • Third Voyage
  • New World Tripel
  • Angry Orchard Hard Cider
  • Boston Lager
  • Alpine Spring

Basso will be offering up flights of these beers along with a special Boston-inspired menu by chef Patrick Connolly. They expect this to be a jam-packed event, so you may want to think about reservations. For more information including a phone number, be sure to check out the image below.
