Today, from 4PM to 6PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting in which they will be pouring: 4 Hands Contact High, Bells Oberon, Ommegang Gnomegang, Boulevard Boss Tom’s, and Stone Oak Smoke Old Guardian. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cathedral Square’s Jerad Gardner will be at the Randall’s on Manchester from 3-5PM today. He’ll be sampling a variety of Cathedral Square’s products. Go on out and say “hi” to Jerad.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

stlhopswikiRound 2 of the challenge is complete and we can see in the brackets what’s been happening in St. Louis the past few years. A changing of the guard is happening, and the new breweries on the block are taking over.

The old favorites, beers like O’Fallon 5 Day and Schlafly APA, which have both done well in past tournaments, have been eliminated. Ten of the sixteen beers remaining are represented by 3 breweries: 2nd Shift, 4 Hands, and Perennial. 2nd Shift alone has four beers remaining. Each year that passes, these newer breweries are getting more and more popular around town, and it shows in the brackets.

Amazingly, we see a rematch of last year’s championship matchup in the sweet 16, with Schlafly AIPA going up against 2nd Shift Art of Neurosis. The other half of the IPA bracket has 4 Hands Divided Sky vs. 2nd Shift Brew Cocky. It will be interesting to see which one of these four will be left standing next week.

Over in the Belgian bracket, 2nd Shift Katy won a very tough matchup against 4 Hands Cuvee Ange and now has to face off with Perennial Saison de Lis. And in the wildcard bracket, you have to choose between two great summer beers: Schlafly Kolsch or O’Fallon Weach.

Check out all the matchups below and help your favorites continue on.

Round 3 – Thu March 28

While we’re lucky enough to be able to drink Schlafly beer, the Repeal of Prohibition festival provides a fantastic chance to try beers from around the country that you may not have ever sampled before.  And, even if you have had them, how often have you had a chance to try them in your own backyard?

Like many other areas in the Midwest, Iowas has quickly put together a bunch of breweries. This year Schlafly will be hosting Peace Tree Brewing Co. (Knoxville), Great River Brewery (Davenport), and Backpocket Brewing Co. (Coralville). Here’s a list of what they’re bringing:

This year’s Repeal of Prohibition will take place on Saturday, April 6th from 12PM-5PM at the Schlafly Bottleworks. Tickets for Repeal are still available, but they’re sure to sell out fast.  Looking forward to this event. It’s one of the best beer festivals all year.

ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant begins their Winter Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM and a second class from 7PM-8PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school is being hosted by David Frost from B United. David will be on hand to discuss and sample Harviestouns Old Engine Oil, Aventinus, schnieder Wiess and Reissdorf Kolsch. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at Cicerosbeerschool.com.

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves (and also now in St. Charles!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will have Left Hand’s Fade to Black Vol. 4 on tap. While the St. Charles location will be serving up the Boulevard Smokestack Grainstorm Black Rye IPA on draft. So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles or Webster tonight!

stlhopswikiWell, Round 1 finished without many surprises. A few interesting matchups, though, are worth talking about. (Click here for all the Round 1 results)

First, Ferguson Pecan Brown barely defeated Cathedral Square Holy Moly 50.5% to 49.5%. Ferguson Pecan is a fine beer, but I think if more people drank Holy Moly, this would’ve turned out differently. Holy Moly is arguably one of the best beers Cathedral Square has to offer and can be found for a pretty low price around town in 22 ounce bottles.

Another close finish was Civil Life English Pale (a.k.a. British Bitter) barely edging out Perennial Peach Berlinerweiss, 50.3% to 49.7%. This was a really tough call for me, and the result might have been different if this was July and it was 100 degrees out. But there is 12″ of snow on the grow so English Pale wins and moves on to face one of the annual favorites, Schlafly Pumpkin.

As each round goes by, the choices get tougher and tougher. Start voting below to help your favorites move on.
