Alaina Kantner from Grey Eagle Distributors is giving away two tickets to the Widmer Brothers Brewing beer dinner at Boogaloo.  The dinner is this Thursday, August 2nd at 7PM. This dinner is part of St. Louis Craft Beer Week.

If you’re interested in winning two tickets that include a four courses being paired with four different Widmer Bros. beers (you will be required to pay the tax and gratuity) email with a subject of “Boogaloo Widmer Beer Dinner”. A couple of quick notes:

  • If you’ve won something from STL Hops in the past 6 months, please be cool and let someone else enter.
  • You much be 21 or older to enter.
  • No multiple entries.
  • If you don’t think you’ll be able to attend, please don’t enter. I’d like to make sure that people available to attend have a chance to win.

The winner will be drawn on Thursday, August 2nd at 9AM. Good luck!

For those of you that attended last week’s Beer School at Cicero’s, you’ll know that I can’t get this one out. So please don’t ask me to pronounce this. But, the harder you work to pronounce the Schurcipefones Festival (taking place Sunday, August 5th at Bridge Tap House and Wine Bar) the more fun you’ll have when you arrive.

This outdoor street festival, which will be taking place from 12PM-6PM will be fun for the whole family. If you’re looking to bring the kids, Dave Bailey promises plenty of activities for young and old alike.

If you’re looking to drink some beer, you’ll need to pony up $25, which will get you unlimited samples from seven different local breweries and one out-of-town guest. The breweries include: Schlafly, Urban Chestnut, Civil Life Brewing, 2nd Shift Brewing, 4 Hands Brewing, Charleville Brewing, Perennial Artisan Ales, and New Belgium.

These may be local breweries, but they’re bringing some never before tasted beers especially for this festival. The special beers will be released every twenty minutes beginning at 12PM. Here’s the current line up of beers:

  • Schlafly – Biere de Garde
  • Schlafly – AIPA
  • Schlafly – Schlafly American Brown
  • Schlafly – Belgian Single
  • Urban Chesnut – Zwickel
  • Urban Chesnut – Magpie
  • Urban Chesnut – Sertaozinho Weiss
  • Perennial – Bailey’s Chocolate Ale with Vanilla

Food, fun, and plenty of great beer seems like a fantastic way to close out St. Louis Craft Beer Week. Don’t miss out.

Just in case you’ve missed it, the 2012 St. Louis Craft Beer Week begins this Saturday. Over the rest of the week I’ll be detailing the events of the festival on STL Hops to bring more visibility to the event.

I, once again, cannot begin to stress enough how important it is for all of us to help make this event successful. We have over 60 events this year (with more and more added every day), so it’s important to get the word out about this week.

If you care about beer and beer awareness in St. Louis, it’s important to show the retailers, breweries and restaurants involved that there are people that care about beer.

So, I know a lot of events are during the middle of the week and people have jobs and lives that make it difficult to attend some of the events, you at least make an effort to try and attend at least one event during the middle of the week. I also realize that money is tight, but a ton of the events are free, so it won’t hurt the pocketbook to attend more than a few.

If you love beer and I know you all do otherwise you wouldn’t be here, it’s time to show it. Anyway, here’s a rundown of the events taking place all week long:Week Long Events

St. Louis Tap Takeover – Bigelo’s Bistro – All Week

Be sure to stop by and see what they have up their sleeve.

Whether you are a St. Louis native or a transplant to our great city, you probably know that we have an affinity for those who hail from St. Louis. Be it be World Series MVP David Freese, that suave actor Jon Hamm, or even our continuing fascination with Nelly, we always have a soft spot for our own. Well did you know that one of the most highly regarded craft breweries in the country has a St. Louis native running their pilot brewing system?

Meet Laura Ulrich, Stone Brewing Company‘s Small Batch Brewer. Small Batch Brewers at Stone take care of the barrel-aging program, oversee casks for local and national accounts, and manage the pilot brewing system, where they try new recipes as well as make special creations and unique one-offs. With all of that also comes conducting tasting panels, upkeep of inventory, and the tracking of these beers progress.

A graduate of Bishop DuBourg High School (you know you were gonna ask), Laura attended Lindenwood University where she earned a degree in English. After college, she moved to Fort Collins, CO where she worked as a bartender for a while and started learning about craft beers. There was an opening at one of the local breweries–Odell Brewing Co. and she couldn’t wait to apply. Part of her interview was hands on, and by her own admission, she wasn’t very good at hand packing bottles into the cases.

I knew in my heart it would be something that I could learn and master. I was told working on the bottling line would be hard, but I was hell bent on proving that I could do it.

Although she always loved Odell Brewing Co (and still does), Laura always wanted to live in Southern California. Hearing that Stone Brewing Company had an opening on the line, she applied.

I was given the job and 30 days to move out, so I packed my car and my cat and we headed west, not knowing anyone or what would happen

Laura has been with Stone Brewing Co. since March of 2004. Starting off on the bottling line and working her way up through the cellar, to the Brewhouse, and then as the Brewery Trainer, before landing her latest gig as Small Batch Brewer. She’s the brewer behind the Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Bean, which came about after tasting a Stone Smoked Porter Real Beer Float.

I was the only female on the line, in the cellar, and then eventually the first female to brew at Stone Brewing Co. Working here has opened my ideas and my passion for beer and brewing. I recall buying my brother homebrewing books while I worked at Odell’s, never thinking that brewing was for me until I got to San Diego.

It’s led to all sorts of cool projects, like helping start the Pink Boots Society, a professional group for women in the beer industry, now with over 800 members!

And while it’s definitely been a crazy ride, I wouldn’t change a thing

Want to meet Laura? Well we’ve got a few events planned during St. Louis Craftbeer Week where you’ll get a chance:

wineandcheeselogo_128x80.jpgI’m pleased to announce that the winnerd for the tickets to the Wine and Cheese Place events taking place during St. Louis Craft Beer Week are:

Patty Bonney – Goose Island Beer & Cheese Tasting
Dan Voorheis – St. Louis vs. America
Jason Rorie – Beer vs Wine

I once again want to thank Paul Hayden from The Wine and Cheese Place for donating the two tickets for each of these events. Beer vs Wine is a sold out event, but there are still tickets available for the other two events.

If you didn’t win, don’t be too upset, we’re going to be giving away all kinds of stuff this weekend for St. Louis Craft Beer Week events via STL Hops, Twitter, and Facebook.
