ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant Winter Beer School may have graduated, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. This Monday from 6:15-7:15 Cicero’s is putting on a special edition of Beer School. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school features Brennan Greene of Schlafly. Brennan will be on hand to discuss the differences between English and American IPAs and Pale Ales. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at Cicerosbeerschool.com.

Let’s face it, when it comes to the boys down at The Civil Life Brewing Company, Jake, Dylan, and Mike know how to throw a party. We all remember the pomp and circumstance that was their Grand Opening. It was big! I have no issue saying it was one of the coolest beer events I have ever been a part of. That sense of community and neighborhood that came along with the event was like no other I have seen. Well get ready because they are back for more!

On Sunday, May 6th from 10AM-6PM The Civil Life Brewing Company presents Pigs & Pints. This will not be your run of the mill beer event, instead it will focus on much of what The Civil Life stands for. This is a “Festival of Local.”

This family friendly event will include a pig roast featuring Red Wattle hogs, sourced by Mac’s Local Buys. These Red Wattles come from Kluesner’s Farm in Marthasville. They’ll be prepared by the good folks from The Block Restaurant in Webster Groves alongside vegetables from Local Harvest Grocery and bread from Companion.

If you have a sweet tooth, there will be ice cream from Baileys’ Range and baked goods from Pint Size Bakery. Need coffee? Well you’re in luck, as the new “it” coffee spot in town will be there in the form of Sump Coffee.

There will be entertainment provided by Stickley & Canan and family tunes from Celia along with a balloon artist for the kids. Local speakers will include Justin Leszcz from YellowTree Farm and author Liz Fathman speaking on Missouri farmers.

But Eric, you said beer. What about beer? Of course there’s beer. The Civil Life will be pouring all of their beers throughout the festival including the release of their new American Pale Ale at 11:30. I contacted Head Brewer Dylan Mosley about the beer and he replied to me in typical Dylan fashion:

So you want to know our secrets?

  • APA – Rahr 2 Row Pale
  • Simpsons Golden Promise
  • Pale Crystal
  • Mashed at 151F
  • Bittered and FWH with Columbus and Cascade
  • Cascade for Middle and Aroma Additions

FG at 3.1P for 5% , Fermented at 68F with American Yeast, Crash Cooled and awaiting its turn in the brite tank. Brew was inspired by classic American Pale Ale themes from the Genesis of the American Craft Brew Movement and structured to pair well with a Pig Roast Throw Down coupled with Great Weather on May 6th.

But wait! There’s more! Given that this festival has a local flare, Jake invited some friends from other breweries around town to share in the festivities. The visiting brews available include:

All-inclusive (beer and food) tickets for this event are $40. Kids’ tickets are $5. Tickets are limited and can be purchased at the brewery, Sump Coffee, and The Block. This is sure to be a can’t miss event!

Let’s all jump into the STL Hops Time Machine all the way back to August of 2010. Yet another new brewery was just being announced and Phil Wymore, the soon to be former head brewer at Half Acre,  had this to say about his new brewery:

“We’re not interested in brewing wheat beer and pale ale as we feel these styles are well-covered by others in St. Louis. We will be focused on farmhouse ales, barrel-aged styles, and fruit beers — basically, the styles that we and our beer geek friends get very excited about.”

Needless to say, a lot of us did get excited about the then impending opening of  Perennial Artisan Ales. We are beer geeks after all and the things that go bump in a barrel are the ones that many of us geek out about the most.

But, barrel-aging takes time. Which is why we geeks have been patient. We know that the good stuff needs to sit sometimes. And good things come to those that wait.

Today, Thursday April 25th at 6PM, Perennial Artisan Ales will release the first beer commercially brewed in St. Louis that was made solely with the yeast, Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. You know all of those beers Phil listed above? This beer has got all of them.

Looking for farmhouse? Few things say “farmhouse” like Brett beers. This also has a ton of fruit. (OK, not technically a ton, but 300lbs of Noiret and Corot Noir grapes.) And of course, this bad boy was aged in French Oak Cabernet barrels for 4 months.

But, let me stop trying to even describe the awesomeness that is this beer and let Perennial’s head brewer Cory King take over:

“One of the best parts about working for Phil here at Perennial Artisan Ales is that he is really open to letting me experiment and run with crazy ideas. There are a lot of brewers and breweries who would have never let me brew a beer that is 100% Brettanomyces fermented!

Well, late last summer, around the time that Missouri starts harvesting its grapes, I started bugging Phil about brewing a beer that incorporated Missouri grown wine grapes, Brett, and barrels. I thought that this would be a great way in incorporate locally sourced ingredients, into a beer that very few other breweries have attempted. Phil found an opening in our brew schedule and gave me the go ahead!

After 2 weeks of calling almost every winery in Missouri, we found out that St. James Winery had 4 rows of unpicked, late harvest grapes, which were experimental for Missouri and were not going to be used this year. I packed up early one morning, heading to St. James, and hand picked almost 300 lbs of Noiret and Corot Noir grapes.

A Belgian Pale Ale malt bill was written, a 2 day sour mash made things funky and tart from the start, primary fermentation with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis added more rustic, barnyard notes, 4 months of aging in French Oak Cabernet barrels with both the grapes and Brettanomyces rounded everything out, and Savant Beersel was born!”

I apologize if I’m over-hyping this beer, but this is just one of the things we knew that would be coming out of Perennial and it’s cool to see something this inventive finally come to fruition. This beer deserves more than glib idioms. For us true beer geeks, this is the start of something very special from Perennial.

Because of the crazy nature of this beer, a very, very limited amount was produced. Your best chance to pick it up will be tonight at Perennial. But be on the lookout as it will hit a few of the regular locations around St. Louis beginning today.

Remember those days in March where it seemed more like summer? I don’t know who the hell thought 86° in the middle of March was a good idea, but it was a load of malarkey.   Luckily, for all of us, spring has made its triumphant return and we’ve been enjoying a very lovely April.

And when you’re having a good spring, why not celebrate.  So,  Urban Chestnut Brewing Company has brought back their  Maifest festival. Taking place on Saturday, May 12th, this will certainly be a party that would make Bacchus blush.

Along with BBQ from The Block, Smoki-O’s, and The St. Louis BBQ Society, you will also be able to enjoy some of the fresh bock beer UCBC brewed especially for this celebration of spring.

The best part about this festival?  It’s free.  There are no ticket charges, just come out between 12PM-11PM on Saturday, May 12th and purchase beer and food to sample throughout the day.  There will be commemorative t-shirts and glassware available for purchase as well.

Saturday, May 12th will be a great opportunity to rock out with your bock out at UCBC.

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves (and also now in St. Charles!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will be featuring the Green Flash Hop Head Red on draught. While the St. Charles location will be serving up Boulder Beer Company Mojo Risin’ So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles or Webster tonight!
