stlhopswikiHere you go folks, the Final Four is now upon us. We’ve whittled it down from 64 different local beers to get down to these big four.

Schlafly AIPA had its biggest challenge yet, facing the Perennial Abraxas and while it was closer than any competition the AIPA has had yet, Abraxas couldn’t seal the deal and AIPA moved on. Another heated battle raged between Schlafly APA and newcomer Civil Life Rye Pale. The APA is certainly the old dog in this competition, but it still had plenty of fight, taking down the Rye Pale.

But, that doesn’t mean Civil Life is out of the competition just yet. The Civil Life American Brown won a grueling battle up against Urban Chestnut’s Hopfen which did very well last year as well. And in a double-up brewery battle, 2nd Shift’s Art of Neurosis took down it’s brother Brew Cocky.

So, what do we know about Round 5? Well, for starters we know that Schlafly will automatically have one beer in the finals as the AIPA will be facing APA in round 5. We will also have two up-starts facing off against each other as Civil Life’s American Brown goes up against 2nd Shift’s Art of Neurosis.

We now have three different breweries representing the last four spots of this tournament, this is truly exciting stuff. Go out and vote for your favorites!

Round Dates:
Round 5 – Thu Mar 29
Championship – Mon Apr 2

So, good luck to everyone and have fun! (If you can’t see the poll below, click on this link to visit the website hosting it.)

Why does it seem like the city gets all of the fun? Please know I’m not trying to get a city/county turf war started here, I live in the county and work in the city. But there is no doubt that when it comes to beer festivals, they almost always take place in the city.

But, chin up county folks, Ferguson Brewing Company is celebrating their second birthday and they’ve inviting everyone along to have a party. On Saturday, April 14th from 1PM to 5PM, Ferguson Brewing will be throwing an Anniversary Brew Fest featuring beers from fifteen local breweries.

Tickets for this event will be $25 and will feature a souvenir tasting glass, light appetizers, and samples from all of the breweries in attendance. To order your tickets, just follow this link. Congrats to Ferguson, looking forward to many years with you guys in St. Louis.

ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant continues their Winter Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM and a second class from 7PM-8PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school is being hosted by Mike Lonero and Josh Wilson of Ferguson Brewing. Mike and Josh will be on hand to discuss and sample some Munich Dunkel, Pecan Ale, and St. Louis Pale Ale. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves (and also now in St. Charles!) to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is continuing their program that they’ve been calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s in Webster will be featuring the Civil Life American Brown Ale on draught. While the St. Charles location will be serving up Grand Teton – 5 O’Clock Shadow So, if you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s in St. Charles or Webster tonight!

stlhopswikiWe’re now down to the Elite 8. This is certainly getting down to the nitty gritty of the tournament. Last round saw the battle of two different breweries facing off against themselves. The good is that you know you’re guaranteed one beer in the 4th round, the bad is that you’re eliminating a beer that could potentially beat another brewery.

Not surprisingly, the Schlafly AIPA continues to put up crazy big numbers, but I think it will have its first real challenge this round when it faces off against newcomer Perennial’s Abraxas Stout. If you’ve been following closely, you’ve noticed that Abraxas has also put up some powerhouse numbers. So, this should be one hell of a competition.

The closest matchup of round 3 has certainly got to be 4 Hand Brewing’s Warhammer Imperial IPA up against Schlafly APA. Schlafly APA has always fared well in this competition. Schlafly absolutely had a fantastic competitor with Warhammer, but APA ended up squeaking out a narrow win.

Round 4 will see a blockbuster showdown as 2nd Shift Brewing has two beers facing off against each other after Brew Cocky took out last year’s co-champion Buffalo Brewing Rye IPA and Art of Neurosis beat up on Six Row’s Extra Pale Ale. It’ll be interesting to see which of 2nd Shift’s hoppy beers reigns supreme.

We now have five different breweries representing the last eight spots of this tournament. Go out and vote for your favorites!
