Archive for January, 2012

It seemed a natural fit when I first heard that Perennial Artisan Ales was going to do a couple of collaboration beers with Half Acre Beer Company out of Chicago. After all, Head Brewer Phil Wymore was most recently a part of the north side Chicago brewery well known for it’s Daisy Cutter Pale Ale before bringing his talents here.

First up for the two breweries is Plan B. A few weeks ago, Half Acre Head Brewer Matt Gallagher came down to St. Louis to spend a brewday at Perennial with Wymore and Cory King. This beer is described a a sour mash Belgian Dark Ale brewed with Black Currants. On this Thursday, February 2 at 6PM Perennial will release this beer in their tasting room. I am told that we can expect to see bottles and draught of this at select locations in a few weeks.

And next up for the old friends? Wymore and Gallagher are hoping to have a concept for the other collaboration very soon and are shooting for a late Spring brewday up in Chicago at Half Acre. We will keep you posted as details arise.

Plan B Label

Let’s face it, Sundays in February are pretty dreary. They’re usually cold, dark, and downright depressing. Couple that with the end of the NFL until next season and it can seem like a long, long time until spring. If you’re the golfing type, this weather is doubly worse. You can see the courses just sitting there, empty and mocking you.

What if I can not only get you out of the house, but also get those clubs a workout? On Sunday, February 12 from 1PM-5PM STL Hops will be throwing its first beer tasting at Tee’s Golf Grill (103 Chesterfield Valley Drive). Our good friends at Tee’s are inviting us to have a beer tasting at their state of the art golf simulator facility.

We have two different price points for this unique tasting experience. If you’re the master linksman, your cost for this event will be $30. This will get you 18 holes at one of the golf simulators. The normal price for using these simulators is $39.99 per hour, so this is an amazing deal. This is a limited event with only 20 tickets available.

If you’re not interested in golf, but still want to drink some awesome beer, the price of admission will be $10. This will cover rental of the facility and tipping the waitstaff who will be helping us out. If we have enough $10 tickets sold, there will also be snacks purchased.

Both tickets can be purchased from Brown Paper Tickets. (There is a small convenience fee added to the ticket.)

This beer tasting will be like all of the other STL Hops beers tasting we’ve had in the past: bring a tasting glass and whatever you want to beers you want to share. This is a great opportunity to break out that bottle that has been sitting in your closet waiting for the perfect time to open.

For those of you looking for a Super Bowl party, be sure to check out after the break the fantastic event that Tee’s is putting on.

I don’t know if you’ll believe it, but today is the 1st anniversary for Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (it’s also head brewer Florian Kuplent’s birthday!) If there is a reason I can’t believe it, it’s because it’s felt like they’ve been here much longer than one year.

It’s insane to see the amount of progress UCBC has had in just a year. It’s very exciting to see and it’s cool to know that we not only have breweries opening in St. Louis, but breweries that are thriving.  To celebrate this momentous occasion, UCBC is throwing a birthday bash.

On Saturday, February 4th, UCBC will be holding a beer festival they’re calling Wolpertinger 2012. If you don’t know what a wolpertinger is, here’s UCBC’s description:

For those of you unfamiliar with the wolpertinger; it is a small (or large depending on your perspective), primarily nocturnal mammal that inhabits the alpine forests of Bavaria. It is quite rare, but we’ve managed to work with of our hop growers in Hallertau and they’ve helped us to ‘import’ one of the little fellas for the special occasion. Being nocturnal, “Wolpie” will be making his grand appearance at the back end of the festival, which will coincide with our very limited release of his UCBC namesake “Wolpertinger 2012”, which we intimately refer to as Winged Nut on Acid, a 9.0% ABV, chestnut ale aged on Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels.

While this party is definitely a celebration of their first anniversary, UCBC wants to use the occasion to celebrate the St. Louis beer scene as a whole. So, they’ve invited out over 15 different local brewers to get in on the fun. Here’s a list of who’s attending:

  • Schlafly
  • Six Row
  • Perennial
  • Civil Life
  • Ferguson
  • Charleville
  • Buffalo
  • 4 Hands
  • Square One
  • Kirkwood Station
  • Exit 6
  • 2nd Shift
  • O’Fallon
  • Augusta
  • Cathedral Square
  • Morgan Street

This event will be running from 1PM to 6PM on Saturday, February 4th and tickets will cost you $30. You can purchase tickets by following this link here. Stay tuned next week as I’ll be giving away some tickets for this event.

Happy birthday to UCBC, looking forward to many years to come.

cabinfeverart.gifWhen I began taking photos of Schlafly‘s Cabin Fever festival this past Saturday, I quickly had a photo essay in mind: People that grab their beer and walk away and the people that don’t. You see, Schlafly made an amazing advancement in this year’s Cabin Fever by making use of a good portion of the Bottleworks parking lot to host this festival.

But that seemingly didn’t matter to a lot of folks. Though there was more room than ever to set up a group of people to talk while staying out of the way of people who wanted to get some beer, people continued to set up shop five feet away from the taps.

Needless to say, this was annoying. Luckily, it got better throughout the day as the firepits were set far away from the taps and people started getting cold and moving toward the warm fires.

So, three cheers to Schlafly for attempting to make a beer festival better. And thumbs down to the people who still don’t seem to care.

Anyway, here are some photos if you weren’t able to attend. If you’re wondering why I took pictures of empty parking lot, it’s to emphasize just how much additional space there was.

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is starting a new program that they’re calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s will be featuring the Southern Tier Choklat on draught. This beer will only be available at the Webster Groves location and will only be on tonight. If you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s tonight.
