Archive for December, 2011

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is starting a new program that they’re calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s will be featuring the Southern Tier Krampus on draught. This beer will only be available at the Webster Groves location and will only be on tonight. If you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s tonight.

taproomlogo_94x128.jpgThis is the big one. Schlafly has been in our lives for 20 years. For a lot of people just turning 21 this year, they’ve never known a world without Schlafly. That’s a pretty cool and scary thought for many of us.

To celebrate their 20th Anniversary, Schlafly is forgoing the standard just serving beer at 1991 prices on December 26th and making it a full weekend of celebration. Beginning on Thursday, December 22nd and running through December 26th, the Schlafly Tap Room will be selling their beers at the 1991 pricing.

There will also be live music on Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Here’s who’s playing this weekend:

Dec. 22nd 8PM – Magic City, Spelling Bee, Half Gay, TOK
Dec. 23rd 8PM – The Flying Mules, The Orbits, Fairchild
Dec. 26th 6 9:30PM – Lucky Dog Band

Schlafly will be open on Christmas Eve, with the restaurant closing at 3PM, and the bar closing at 5PM. They will be closed on Christmas Day. Come and celebrate with the fine folks at Schlafly and make sure to wish them a very happy birthday.

Here’s a list of upcoming beer events:

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting hosting Cara from Boulevard Brewing. Here’s some of the beers they’ll be sampling: Boulevard Amber Ale, Boulevard Pale Ale, Boulevard Single Wide IPA, and Boulevard Nommo Dubbel. You’ll also be able to try Mikkeller Sur Monk and Fantome La Dalmatienne as well. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cory from deVine Wines and Spirts, located at 2961 Dougherty Ferry Rd, holds a beer tasting every Wednesday evening from 5PM to 8PM. Each Wednesday will offer up a few new beers for you to taste. Swing on by and check it out.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

I know I’ve talked about it ad nauseum, but I’m just so, so amazed how much awesome beer stuff has been happening in St. Louis in 2011. One of the coolest things has been that we’ve seen four new breweries open in our area this year.

Well, tonight we can now say there are five new breweries that have opened in 2011. I’m happy to announce that 4 Hands Brewing will be opening their tasting room on Thursday, December 15th at 3PM.

Moving forward the hours of operation at 4 Hands will be Wed-Fri 3PM – 11PM and Saturday 1PM-11PM. They will also be cash only their first week of operation with credit cards being accepted as early as next week.

While many of us had a sneak preview of their pilot beers at their soft opening back in November, this is official opening and your first chance to try their production beers. While all of their beers won’t be available at the start, you will be able to sip on the Reprise Centennial Red, Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown Ale, and Divided Sky Rye when the doors open. Here are some descriptions of three of their four core beers:

Reprise Centennial Red Ale – The Centennial hop is the centerpiece of our American Red Ale. Reprise pushes the limits of a single hop with an amazing bouquet and stunning bitterness all the way through. The citrus character provides an experience you will want to repeat. Reprise is crimson in color with aromas of citrus fruit and biscuit malts.

Divided Sky Rye IPAThis beer brings together two of our favorite ingredients; Hops and Rye – Serious hops up front provide a pungent, floral, and citrus character. We use Centennial, Cascades, and Columbus in this hop lovers dream. The rye provides a slightly spicy flavor and a full mouth-feel. Divided Sky pours straw in color with notes of tangerine, grapefruit, and pine.

Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown AleThis is one monster of a Brown Ale! We used chocolate malt and roasted barley to give this beer a cast iron backbone. Our Oatmeal brown pours a dark mahogany with aromas of dark chocolate and coffee

If you’re looking for a little sustenance while drinking on these tasty beers, 4 Hands has set up food trucks on Thursday (Guerrilla Street Food from 4:30 to 8:30 ) and Friday (Seoul Taco). There will also be live entertainment from 8PM to 11PM on Friday and Saturday.

And now that the doors are open, the next thing we’ll see is distribution in the area. Smartly, 4 Hands will be waiting until after the holidays to begin rolling out their beer on draught to the St. Louis area and then shortly after we can begin seeing it in 22oz package on store shelves.

Five new breweries in 2011. It’s been a great year for beer for all of us. I can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store.

The HandleBar, is ready to start your Christmas vacation off right as they’ll be holding their second “Beer Christmas” starting at 7PM on Thursday, December 22nd. To put some jingle in your stocking the fine folks at Six Row Brewing Company will be bringing a very special cask of Snickerdoodle Porter that’s a cinnamon stick spiced variation of the Six Row Vanilla Porter.

Not only will there be a special cask, but each pint you purchase will earn you a raffle ticket for possibly winning some “gifts” wrapped under the tree. After the cask blows, all of the taps turn back to happy hour pricing!

If you’re looking to avoid the Christmas ham, the Handlebar kitchen will still be serving up some awesome grub.  This sounds like a great excuse to get out of the house before you’re surrounded by family in that ugly Christmas sweater.

This week Llyweyln’s will be featuring the New Belgium Prickly Pear Saison on draught. This beer will only be available at the Webster Groves location and will only be on tonight. If you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s tonight.
