Here’s a list of upcoming beer events:

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting. They’re hosting Jeremy Cowen from Shmaltz Brewing Company. Here’s some of the beers they’ll be sampling: Hebrew Genesis Ale, Hebrew Lenny’s RIPA, Hebrew Messiah Bold, Coney Island Albino Python, Coney Island Sword Swallower, plus a special beer Barrel Aged Blockhead. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cory from deVine Wines and Spirts, located at 2961 Dougherty Ferry Rd, holds a beer tasting every Wednesday evening from 5PM to 8PM. Each Wednesday will offer up a few new beers for you to taste. Swing on by and check it out.

Also on Wednesday, the Naked Vine holds a beer tasting from 5-7PM. This tasting will give you a chance to try some of Naked Vine’s offerings and is absolutely free. Check out their Twitter feed for more updates.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at

ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant continues their fall Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM and a second class from 7PM-8PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry.

It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s 5:30PM and 7PM school is being taught by Mitch Turner from Major Brands. Mitch will be on hand to discuss and sample some beers including the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous IPA, New Belgium Snow Day, Schlafly Schwarzbier, and Avery Out of Bounds Stout. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at

While it’s fun to be on the hunt to try and find that special or fun beer, it can be pretty tiring. Well, you can stop running all around town and visit Llywelyn’s Pub in Webster Groves to see something cool on tap. Llywelyn’s is starting a new program that they’re calling “A Brew You Never Knew.”

Each Wednesday, Llywelyn’s will feature a single beer on draught that may have been overlooked or in some cases is the only draught version of that beer in town. It’ll be a chance to re-visit an old favorite or even discover something you’ve never had before.

This week Llyweyln’s will be featuring the Six Row Vanilla Porter on draught. This beer will only be available at the Webster Groves location and will only be on tonight. If you’re looking for something special without all of the lists and missed opportunities, make sure to stop into Llywelyn’s tonight.

While it’s always cool to meet a brewer from your favorite breweries, they’re something slightly cooler about meeting the owner. It takes some very big cojones to start your own business and I think there is something special about meeting the guys who have the gumption to go out and make their own road.

One of those guys who made a go of it is Jeremy Cowan of Shmaltz Brewing Company. Jeremy will be in St. Louis later this week to promote his new book Craft Beer Bar Mitzvah, a memoir detailing what it took to start Shmaltz.

If you’d like to meet Jeremy he’ll be speaking at the Jewish Community Center as part of the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival on Thursday, November 17th at 7:30PM (you can purchase tickets here.) He’ll also be signing copies of his book at Left Bank Books (the downtown location) on Saturday, November 19th from 4PM to 6PM.

After the book signing, Jeremy will be heading next door to the Bridge to enjoy some Messiah Bold and RIPA on draft. This is a great opportunity to meet one of the guys who helped to make this US craft beer renaissance a reality.

Mangia Italiano is putting on another of their beer dinners this Thursday, November 17th at 6:30PM (doors open at 5:30) featuring courses paired with beers from Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. The cost is $45 per person; reservations are required and can be made by calling 314-664-8585. Here is the menu for the event:

mangia.gifPoached Pear Salad
Fresh pears poached in beer and orange juice over mixed greens with red onions, spicy walnuts, and goat cheese.
7 Grain Pale Ale

Kentucky Burgoo
A hearty stew with beef, pork, and turkey with a wide array of fresh vegetables.
Apotheosis Saison

Steamed in a creamy Schnickelfritz citrus broth with pepperdews, jalapeos, and red onions.
Schnickelfritz Bavarian Weissbier

Venison Chops
Dry rubbed with smoked tomatoes, grilled and served with honey tarragon rainbow carrots and a twice-baked potato.
Hopfen ‘Bavarian IPA’

Stout Ice Cream
Topped with pralines and a chocolate honey sauce.
Russian Imperial Stout

stlhopslogosmall.gif While I plan on bringing a few tasting glasses, it would be best if you brought your own tasting glass. Please make it an actual tasting glass if at all possible.  I’d rather people not drink whole pints.

As you’ve seen, we’re going to have a lot of beer. A lot of beer. First thing, be safe. If you need a ride, let someone know. In years past we’ve allowed people to bring growlers to take home some of the beer after the event. I can’t promise there will be beer left or if you’ll be able to fill a growler, but if you leave one in your car for the end of the party, it may not be a bad idea.

There will be snacks provided. The past few years have seen a lot of food at this party, so make sure to enjoy some of the delicious food.

We will be doing wristbands this year.  So, if you don’t have a ticket and a wristband, don’t be surprised if someone asks you to leave.  Can’t crash the party, sorry.

We received a ton of swag this year, so bring some money along (a check book wouldn’t hurt for the silent auction) with you as this is for a great cause, Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Here’s a list of some the places that have provided prizes for tomorrow night’s event (I’m sorry if I missed you!):

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email (my email address is in the Contact page), I’ll try and answer it when I free up some time. Can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow night.

Ticket sales end today (Saturday) at 12PM. Tickets will be available at the door for $30. We will be able to accept credit cards for all purchases this evening!
