stlhopswikiOh doctor, Round 3 provided some interesting wins along with a major upset by an upstart.  In the battle of the Schlafly hops, the AIPA solidly beat the APA by a 62 to 38 margin.  All while Six Row brewing keeps the wins coming having their Porter and Extra Pale Ale beat out two longstanding breweries.

But, in what I think is the biggest upset of the tournament, newcomer Second Shift Brewery’s Art of Neurosis IPA edged out a 50.5 to 49.5 victory over the extremely popular Schlafly Kolsch.

But, the Elite 8 is going to provide some tougher matches for all the competition.  We have O’Fallon 5 Day IPA going up against the also hoppy Buffalo Rye IPA.  In another interesting match-up, we’ll see two new breweries facing off when Urban Chestnut’s Hopfen takes on Six Row’s Porter.

Who will reign supreme?  That’s up to you. Get going and vote for your favorite beers!

Round Dates:
Round 4 – Mon Mar 28
Round 5 – Mon Mar 31
Championship – Mon Apr 4

Here’s a list of upcoming beer events:

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will hold its weekly Friday beer tasting. Here’s some of the beers they’ll be sampling today: Odell Myrcenary IPA, Mikkeller Big Worst 18.5% Edition, Firestone Walker Hemp Ale, and Jolly Pumpkin Dark Dawn. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Cory from deVine Wines and Spirts, located at 2961 Dougherty Ferry Rd, holds a beer tasting every Wednesday evening from from 5PM to 8PM. Each Wednesday will offer up a few new beers for you to taste. Swing on by and check it out.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

SixRow_logoIt probably makes me an ultra beer nerd, but not only do I have a favorite hop variety, but I also have a favorite adjunct grain. (Let’s be honest, have two ingredients probably doesn’t make me a huge beer nerd, but devoting an entire website to beer probably does.)

My favorite hop is Centennial and my favorite adjunct is rye.  So, one has to guess that Six Row Brewing Company‘s newest creation, the Centennial Rye has to be right up my alley, right?  Let’s look at the description and find out:

Much like an American-Style wheat beer, light, crisp, and refreshing, but with a twist-the use of rye malt, adding a nice, almost tart character to this seasonal brew. Unlike an IPA, it uses its namesake hop, Centennial, to add a citrus and grapefruit finish without overpowering the subtle spiciness of the rye. Perfect for warmer weather! (ABV: 6.5%, Bitterness Units: 27 IBUs, Color: 5 SRM, Original Gravity: 13.7 Degrees Plato)

    Rye? Check.
    Centennial hops? Check.

For those of us that love that spicy rye flavor and that floral Centennial hop aroma, it sounds like a real winner.  This beer is on tap right now, so head on in to Six Row and let everyone know what you think in the comments.

stlhopswikiHere we go, Round 3 has started and we’re in for some interesting battles.  But before we look forward, let’s take a look at some match-ups from Round 2.

Surprisingly, O’Fallon 5 Day IPA eked out a victory over the very popular Schlafly Reserve Series Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout winning 54.5 to 45.5. Second Shift Art of Neurosis continues to win beating Trailhead Old Courthouse Stout 69 to 31.

Now, we’re on to some insane matches in Round 3.  First up, we have, what’s got to be one of the toughest matches of the entire bracket with Schlafly APA taking on Schlafly AIPA.  This is a match of the ages.  It’ll be interesting to see what hoppy beer reigns supreme. We also have Second Shift’s AoN going up against the very popular Schlafly Kolsch.

Can’t wait to see who the winners are next Monday. Get going and vote for your favorite beers!

    Round Dates:
    Round 3 – Thu Mar 24
    Round 4 – Mon Mar 28
    Round 5 – Mon Mar 31
    Championship – Mon Apr 4

So, good luck to everyone and have fun! (If you can’t see the poll below, click on this link to visit the website hosting it.)

Do you know this man?  His name is Jim O’Connor and he works for Bell’s Brewery.  Where Jim goes, great beer follows.  Need proof?  How about what’s got to be one of the final casks of Hopslam available in the St. Louis metro area.

Jim will be pouring this cask next Wednesday, March 30th beginning at 5PM at Bigelo’s Bistro.  And because this is always fun, Mark from Bigelo’s will be putting on a keg of Hopslam as well to give you a chance to compare and contrast the cask version to the standard draught version.

Do you need more incentive?  How about a surprise guest appearance by beer celebrity bartender Jerad Gardner?  Any time Jerad shows up for a party, you know you’re in for a good time.

So, if you’re on the east side of the river or if you’re looking for something fun to do next Wednesday night, be sure to head out to Bigelo’s.  Oh, and make sure to try the STL Hops pizza while you’re there!

ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant continues their Winter Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school will be hosted by Paul DeVries of Goose Island Brewing Company. This will be your chance to discuss and sample some of the beers from Goose Island, including the Pepe Nero, Matilda, IPA, Summer Kolsch and 312. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at Cicerosbeerschool.com.
