ciceros.jpg Cicero’s Italian Restaurant continues their Winter Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry. It’s perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school is being hosted by Patrick Fraiser from Glazer’s. Patrick will be on hand to discuss and sample some Spaten Franziskaner, Franz Dunkel, Optimator and Lager. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!

If you can’t make it out to the Beer School, you can check out all of the classes via podcast at Cicerosbeerschool.com.

biglogo.JPGAh, it’s almost that time of year, the time to remind your significant other that you care for them, and by significant other, I mean beer. Bigelo’s Bistro will be hosting a Beer Dinner on Sunday, February 14th starting at 4PM.

This dinner will be pairing five courses with five different beers from the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.  The cost of the dinner will be $39 (tax and gratuity is not included).

Also on hand for the event will be Steve Thiel of Sierra Nevada.  Steve will be there to discuss the beers as well as the pairings for each course.

Tickets for this event must be purchased in advance.  Call 618-655-1471 for more information. Stay tuned next week as I’ll be giving away two tickets for this event.

I’ve been told by a number of people that Burns Night at the Schlafly Tap Room is one of their favorite beer events in St. Louis.  I can now proudly count myself as one of those people as well.

If you’ve never attended, you must try and do it at least one.  The pageantry, the revelry, the poetry, the delicacies and of course the beer.  It makes for one hell of an evening.  If you weren’t able to attend, here’s some photos from the evening.

dannosDanno’s American Pub, located at 7895 Watson Rd, 63119, is a bar that has been family owned for about 30+years. It’s gone through a couple of name changes over the years, but it’s historically been kind of a blue collar bar over it’s history.

When Danno’s co-owner Chris Muether re-opened the bar under a new name this past July, he decided that the neighborhood was ready for an upgrade over the staid beers of the past. Chris, being a lover of great beer decided to introduce a new beer list that includes more craft and import selections.

It also includes a new monthly series of beer tastings. Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 26th from 6:30PM -10PM they will be a sampling of some of the best Bock beers available in the St. Louis area. The cost of the sampling is $25 and includes the following:

  • Four 6 ounce tasters each complemented by a separate food pairing. These will include hors d’oeuvres, salad, entree, and dessert.
  • Door prizes given to lucky participants that include special edition beers, gifts from local sponsors, and other primo swag.
  • Brief background and history of the beer style provided by event curator and barman Chris Muether.
  • Live entertainment provided by Chad with Future Stars Karaoke. (AKA the only after party you need)

Tickets for this event much be pre-purchased. You can purchase tickets by visiting Danno’s MySpace page (scroll down a bit and look for the Paypal “Buy Now” link.

OFALLON_RGB300WLB Small Web viewFor those of you not following the STL Hops Twitter feed, you’ll be happy to hear that O’Fallon Brewery is announcing some new additions to their current beer line-up. First up is the O’Fallon Brewers Stash series:

O’Fallon Brewers Stash

The name of this series came about because every brewery has a small stash of beer that was brewed by and given to the brewers. Usually it’s a big collection of great beer and this your peek into that collection.

  • Seasonal Releases
  • Sold in 4 packs
  • First up is O’Fallon Wee Heavy Scotch Ale
  • 10.5%ABV
  • Draught should be available in a couple of weeks.
  • May or may not be same beer from year to year.

Next is the biggest news from O’Fallon, a new year-round addition to their regular line up:

Hemp-Hop-Rye Amber Ale

This beer was originally created in October 2009 as a new everyday selection to the current year-round  line up. O’Fallon co-owner Tony Caradonna didn’t want to re-invent the wheel when coming up with a new product, but was looking to do something different.

After working with the TTB to get approval, they brewed the first batch of beer at the O’Fallon location for draught sales. Toasted Hemp Seeds are added right to the mash.  The hemp will make up about 5% of the total grist.

  • 5.5%ABV with a color of 11 SRM
  • Hops: Summit – Bittering, German Hallertau – Flavor, Cascade – Aroma
  • Should see draught in about 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Bottles should be available over the next few months.

The last big announcement is that we’ll begin seeing O’Fallon Wheach sold in 12-pack cans starting this spring. With the exception of the Wheach can label below, it’s important to remember that all of the packaging you see below is still unregistered and could change.
