dannosDanno’s American Pub, located at 7895 Watson Rd, 63119, is a bar that has been family owned for about 30+years.  It’s gone through a couple of name changes over the years, but it’s historically been kind of a blue collar bar over it’s history.

When Danno’s co-owner Chris Muether re-opened the bar under a new name this past July, he decided that the neighborhood was ready for an upgrade over the staid beers of the past.  Chris, being a lover of great beer decided to introduce a new beer list that includes more craft and import selections.

It also includes a new monthly series of beer tastings.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 24th from 6:30PM -10PM they will be a sampling of some of the best Porters available in the St. Louis area.   The cost of the sampling is $25 and includes the following:

  • Four 6 ounce tasters, each paired with a separate food course. These courses include a fruit and cheese sampler, a garden fresh salad with walnuts, a main entre featuring beef medallions in a porter-based sauce (or ask for our vegetarian option), and a dessert (paired with Breckenridge’s vanilla porter!).
  • Door prizes for guests, including the chance to win gift certificates to local sponsors and other prizes just for attending! This month Apop Records (on historical Cherokee Street) has offered up a 25$ gift certificate to a lucky guest!
  • A brief history of the beer style presented by beer lover and barman Chris Muether.
  • Live music to wrap up the end of our tasting. This month we’re welcoming back the Dave Stone Trio.

For more details about Danno’s be sure to check out their MySpace page.

Big props to Paul Hayden from the Wine and Cheese Place for discoving this bit of news, but it appears that O’Fallon Brewery has upgraded their liquor(?) license which will allow them to brew beers with higher ABVs.

According to O’Fallon’s co-founder Tony Caradonna, they already have some big plans coming over the next year. And it doesn’t look like he’s kidding. If you look at the image below, you can see that they’ve already registered a Russian Imperial Stout with the U.S. Government. As you can also see below, this will be a draught only item.

While I’m sure everyone, including O’Fallon Brewery, would love to see their beer brewed and bottled back in Missouri, it’s nice to know that contract brewing has given them a bit more breathing room to do some fun stuff like this.  I can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

I’ve made a change in how the beer tastings will be listed in the Friday Round-Up, it’s going to be a week’s worth of tastings starting with the Friday that the list is posted. So if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will be having a tasting featuring Magic Hat Howl, Magic Hat Kitty Kat, Magic Hat Odd Notion Sour Ale, Left Hand Fade to Black, and if it arrives tomorrow, Boulevard Harvest Dance Wheat Wine. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

So I’ve teased it in the forums a bit, but I thought I’d let you’d know what to expect tomorrow at the STL Hops Anniversary Party!

While I plan on bringing a few tasting glasses, it would be best if you brought your own tasting glass.  Also as you’re going to see in a second, we’re going to have a lot of beer.  A lot of beer. First thing, be safe.  If you need a ride, let someone know.

Second, bring along an empty, sanitized growler for the end of the night.  Once again, I plan on bringing a few extra growlers, but not a lot.  I can’t promise you’ll fill the growler, but I’m thinking it’s going to be pretty likely.

We received a ton of swag this year, in fact, it’s not all in the photo.  If you see a single beer glass in the photo, you can automatically assume we have multiples. Oh, and I couldn’t even fit everything into the photo.

Some of the items in the photo will be raffles, some will be silent auctions. So bring some money along (a check book wouldn’t hurt for the silent auction) with you as this is for a great cause, Stray Rescue of St. Louis.

Now, here’s a list of the beers/breweries that I know are confirmed for the party at this point:

          • Schlafly Cask (Not sure what cask yet, but I think we can assume something hoppy.)
          • Founders Old Curmudgeon courtesy of Missouri Beverage
          • Boulevard Single Wide IPA
          • Bell’s Two Hearted 1/2 bbl, courtesy of Bell’s.
          • A case of each, La Folie and Transatlantique Kriek courtesy of New Belgium Brewery
          • Morgan Street Brewing
          • Buffalo Brewing
          • Highlands Brewery
          • Maybe More?

Here’s a list of the places that have provided prizes for tomorrow night’s event:

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email (my email address is in the Contact page), I’ll try and answer it when I free up some time. Can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow night.

stlhopslogosmall.gifSorry about the delay on this, I’ve been literally driving around all afternoon to pick up beer and prizes for tomorrow night’s party.

So, I’m pleased to announce that the winner for the two tickets to the STL Hops 2nd Anniversary Party is Jill Koehler! Congrats to Jill and thank you everyone for entering.

I once again want to thank everyone for selling out this event. It’s very exciting to see how passionate people are about beer in St. Louis and this event is proof that people care not only about beer, but also about helping stray animals. Thank you all once again.

Coming later today, I’m going to list all of the prizes we’ll have to offer for the raffles and silent auctions for the party.

Full Disclosure: I was paid to create and maintain the beer selection at Niche, Taste by Niche, and Brasserie by Niche.  While I do think the information provided below is completely newsworthy and relevant to the St. Louis beer scene, I thought you should know this up front.

Now that we have that bit of legal mumbo jumbo out of the way, here is the beer list that is currently in place at Chef Gerard Craft’s newest restaurant, Brasserie by Niche.

Just in case you’re curious how the list got to the way it is, here’s a bit of a brain dump: Chef Craft wanted a beer list that was more conducive to a French Bistro. So it relies heavily on French/Belgian styles and a couple of European beers. I’ve thrown a few American craft beers on for those who aren’t crazy about Belgian beers.

Is the list going to be in a state of flux? I hope it’s always in a state of flux. I think the draught list will be the most actively changing list. As you can see, there are three Belgian/French style beers and three American beers on draught, which is how I’d like to keep it, but time will tell. At this moment, the Griesedieck Pilsner will be a mainstay and I think the Schlafly Kolsch will also stick around all the time. Both are clean, easy drinking beers with a continental feel.

I can see a stout or porter eventually arriving on the draught list. But it would mean something like Red’s Rye coming off. In the meantime Schlafly Oatmeal Stout and Ellie’s Brown Ale are currently available in a bottle. I chose the Maudite because it is “dark” but provides a malt sweetness that is never cloying and finishes quite dry. It’s not quite a stout, but I think it’ll pair up to some food quite nicely.

Keep an eye out, we’re going to have changes coming to Niche and Taste as well.
