stable_128x126.jpgYou have to give it to The Stable’s beverage manager Jerad Gardner, he’s not one to rest upon the 2008 Best Beer Selection award from the Riverfront Times, he’s always trying to push the envelope.   So it should be no surprise that his newest creation tugs at the beer geek’s heart.

Starting this Friday, Jerad begins a series of events he calls “Firkin Fridays.” Over a number of different Fridays, Jerad will be bringing in different cask ales from different breweries around the nation. This Friday, July 3rd, beginning at 4PM, you’ll have a chance to purchase pints of Arcadia Dry Hopped Sky High Rye cask ale.

Many of us have been begging for more cask ale in the St. Louis area and Jerad, as always, has been listening.

dsc02140For those of you that missed the first go arounds of Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout a little over a week ago, 33 Wine Shop and Tasting Bar will be serving CBS starting tomorrow, Tuesday June 30th at 3:30PM.

As I stressed in the last post, this is a very rare beer.  So if you had the misforture of misfortune of missing it the first time or you want one last taste, this is probably your last opportunity to enjoy this beer in the comfort of your hometown.

I’ve made a change in how the beer tastings will be listed in the Friday Round-Up, it’s going to be a week’s worth of tastings starting with the Friday that the list is posted. So if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will be having a tasting featuring Grand Teton Lost Continent Double IPA, Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss, Struise Black Albert, and Arcadia Sky High Rye. Additional information can be found at their blog.

Once again, if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

biglogo.JPGI’m pleased to announce that the winner for the two tickets to the Bigelo’s Bistro Beer Dinner is Jill Koehler! Congrats to Jill and thank you everyone for entering. If you didn’t win, don’t be too upset, once again I have some cool stuff to give away soon.

I once again want to thank Mark from Bigelo’s Bistro for providing the two tickets to their June beer dinner. I also want to thank Mark for everything he does for the Metro beer scene. He’s gone out of his way to help beer lovers and homebrewers alike. Make sure to patronize his restaurant and thank him for everything!

Looks like we’re going to have another competitor for our beer dollars coming in the next few weeks.  The Brick House Tavern and Tap, opening in Chesterfield, claims to be “Man Cave Meets Temple to Beer”  and is offering up what looks to be an extremely boring beer list. (Note, this is a chain, so everything you see on this list won’t necessarily be available in Missouri.)

But this is the part that caught my attention:

We’re not here for a long time we’re here for a good time and with table side micro-kegs, 40 ounce bottled beers, 100 oz beer bongs, hand pulled cask beer and affordable wines we’re sure ‘a good time’ is what you’ll have. Hang out in the bar with us or grab a seat anywhere you want. We’re here to dispense happiness.

Call me an elitist if you want, but beer bongs and hand pulled cask (which I hear is going to be Schlafly) beer?  Really? And, oh look, you can even get a bong full of cask beer!  Oh joy!  Judging by the photo below, maybe “bong” is just a clever marketing term for what amounts to nothing more than a modern day pitcher.

I know it doesn’t seem like it, but I’m going to hold off judgment untilI visit the place for myself.  But all of the accoutrements of a great bar don’t mean jack if the beer selection sucks.

summertimeComing up on Thursdays this summer, we’re going to have Discussion Day. I’ll pose some sort of question and I’d like to know what people’s thoughts and opinions are. We’re going to start it off easy today.

Summer may just have started, but this sweltering weather seems to have no end in sight.  So what are some of your favorite beers to quench your thirst this summer?  Have you been sticking with some of your old standbys or have you been moving to lighter, easier drinking beers?

Personally, I don’t change my habits that much.  I don’t particuarly enjoy the bearing heat, so the wonders of modern indoor environmental thermal comfort mean that I’m willing to drink a Dark Lord, even in August.  But if I’m out with friends on a warm summer evening I’ll usually lighten up my choices.

I’m a big fan of Schlafly Weissbier this time of year.  Light and refreshing with a ton of wheat character.  It has a wonderful banana/clove aroma that makes it completely engaging.

While it comes in at 8% ABV, I have to say I really think that Boulevard’s Tank 7 saison is just a wonderful summertime beer.  Nice and dry with a zip of hops that never interferes or overwhelms the Belgian yeast.  It’s very refreshing, just don’t drink too many of them.

With all of the discussion about Belgian Witbiers in John’s KYS yesterday, I was a little surprised to see one of my favorite wits wasn’t mentioned.  Hitachino Nest White Ale (you know, the one with a cute owl on the label) was one of the first beers that made me realize that wheat beers don’t have to be bland and boring.  The spicing is prevelant, but never overpowering.

What are some of your favorites?
